I'm playing this game Dark Souls and there's this ring in the game called "Covetous Serpent Ring" and I felt like it was wrong of me to put on that ring because of the word "covetous." I feel like I sinned or just did something wrong. I don't use items that have "Evil" or "Demon" in the name of the item either because it makes it look bad.

Have you ever felt bad or felt like you sinned because of doing something in a game?

I feel odd about doing evil things in games. I usually skip those missions because I don't want my character to have a bad reputation.

I wouldn't have a problem in a game like Left 4 Dead playing a zombie, but in Fable, my character is almost perfectly "good".

lol, you are an Atheist and you keep to the "good" side. But as a Christian when I play a game like Infamous for PS3, I always choose the "bad" side. Mostly because I have a bad habit of taking down the enemy, but also taking down lots of innocents at the same time(probably the American in me ;) ), so I dont want to be penalized.

I don't want my crystal reputation tarnished :p

I have a lot of Achievements on my Xbox that have not been completed in the Fable games because I just don't want to be evil enough to earn them.

I don't recall feeling bad about doing something in a game, but I have felt convicted about reacting a certain way while playing a game. There have been moments in games that made me uncomfortable and I did choose the "good" path in games like Infamous and BioShock, but I don't think it would bother me to wear "evil" armor.

It's interesting you mention Dark Souls, because it's the only game in recent memory to inspire real anger.

I rented the game from Redbox because of all the glowing reviews, but learned that the game had no checkpoints or save points before bosses, no pause button, and a locked save file (meaning the user can not back up his or her save file to a USB drive).

I knew Dark Souls was going to be difficult, but I was disappointed to discover that the "difficulty" was derived mostly from bad design (clunky combat, no checkpoint or save point before bosses, having to repeat the same 5-10 minute segment of the game many, many times over, etc.).

After defeating the Taurus Demon, I saved, quit the game, and returned it to Redbox, having decided I had lost all interest in purchasing Dark Souls.

covet just means to want something badly if your deisres dont cause you to do harm to any one how are they wrong?

whats more important then the name is how you feel about the items do you covet this ring not just want it but crave it?

do you covet any other items in the game because your not measured by what the items you have are called but what you did to do to get them and how you feel about them and what effect having and using them has on the game world if theirs items you want more then the ring then your closer to being covetous with those items instead, no matter what there called.

do you have to role play in a manner you fined to be unethical to get the ring or demonic items?

will using these items cause evil to happen in the game?

if not you may as well use these things to do as you see fit in the game

all these items are bits of code made and named by the same group of people if getting them and using them doesn't effect the game world in any way then just using them is not role playing as evil

also in regards to demonic items are the being called demons in the game inherently evil? remember in a fantasy world you not always using are worlds religious cosmology so a demon may not always be evil or a demon at all by your reckoning a god may not always be good and what a game considers to be holy may be different then what you consider to be so

no then if you determine demons to be evil are items call demonic evil in some way them selves or are they merely neutral tools crafted by or out of beings you would consider evil

in the latter case i see nothing wrong with using those items for good as you see it

The ring helps me find items that hardly drop off fallen enemies. I think the regular item discovery is 100 and with the ring it boosts it up to 300. So it's way more likely to find items that will help me. I usually just put it on to find titanite items that you can use to upgrade your weapons and armor and i use to find humanity easier so I can turn back to human and find help to defeat bosses. Someone can only join your multiplayer world to help only if you're human. So I farm humanity and titanite to upgrade my stuff. It does nothing evil in the game world.

I also joined this covenant in the game called Darkmoon Blade. With this covenant you can invade other peoples worlds and attack them. But the Darkmoon Covenant only invades those who are guilty of committing something bad in the game.

I do it because it's fun to face other players!

I use all kinds of "dark" items in games. (Full Daedric armor!) And I don't really feel convicted about it. Playing games is weird. Sometimes I make my character act in the noblest way possible (like in Mass Effect, my Commander Shepard is pure Paragon). But sometimes, like in the Fable games, the humor of the game sneaks up on me, and before I know it, I'm sacrificing villagers left and right at the Temple of Shadows. (Wheel of Unholy Misfortune!)

Anyway, Dark Souls looks pretty hard, but I hear it's fun. (Maybe it requires a bit of masochism?) Maybe I'll pick it up once it comes down in price a little. (And if I'm thinking to myself: you know what? I don't die nearly enough in games lately. I need a game that will kill me over and over again!)

I had this discussion with my boss recently who is doing a psychology degree and is also a gamer like me. There has been genuine research into peoples choices of how they play their game. I personally feel "uncomfortable" playing against what I would do if I were actually in the game and apparently this is quite common according to my boss who has seen this research.
