• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have you ever changed your opinion on a topic on this forum?

Either a person is right or wrong on most forum debates. Have you ever changed your opinion on any topic in this forum? If so what was your original opinion and your changed opinion?

When I first came to these forums I was an Arminian, though I knew it not. God used people on these forums to convince me of the truth of Calvinism.

It seems most people come here for reinforcement of existing ideas, affirmation of their intelligence or debating skills, or just because they like to argue. So, changed minds are rare.

When I post a question, I am often undecided on which answer is best or unclear why I feel the way I do, so I use the ensuing exchange to refine my position. Therefore, I have a long list of things where my view has been impacted: the nature of space, time, the physical, the spiritual, mind/body duality, the problem of evil, God's foreknowledge, miracles the nature of morality, the place of the church, tradition, science, politics ...

Second trimester abortions! Pro-lifers taught me what I needed to know to accept the fact that except for medical reasons, they are cruel. But nobody convinced me (because they can't) that there is no reason to abort a pregnancy caused by incest or rape. What changed my mind was how people described abortions, specifically the most common second trimester method, which you don't want to watch.

I can't say that there is one particular issue were my opinion changed 180 degrees. there may have been but I don't recall any . However, I certainly have a much different perspective on people who hold opinions that I disagree with. Participating in discussion , argument and even disputation on an issue with a number of people with a range of diversity of opinion IMO opens ones mind to possibilities and if it does not alter one's opinions in the slightest I think one must be totally unreasonable. Many of my opinions have been tweaked by encountering others on this forum if not completely reversed.

When I signed up for CF I was more of an fundamentalist and a right-wing conservative. I pursue traditional (Lutheran & Anglican) denominations because they are liturgical and sacramental and I'm more socially center now.

Yes.

For example, I started my time here at CF as a Reformed Presbyterian. Prior to me signing up here I had considered Catholicism, but had backed away from it. After some conversations here I decided to considere it again, and began the RCIA course in the Catholic Church. After seeing conversations with some of the Orthodox, I began to hear them out for the sake of fairness. Then after a few months of talking with the Orthodox here at CF, I went to an Orthodox service and have been Orthodox ever since.
