hello everyone, i am new to this site and to the adventist forum, i recently have been converted to become a adventist but still have a few questions. its mainly to do with the sabbath. i know that the sabbath is a holy day unto the lord and we are to spend time with god on that day, but what exactly must we not do on that day? i know we are not to work, or cook foods? i have heard people say that we are not to spend any money or watch television or any such thing, i just wanted to be certain.

thanks in advance
god bless!!:)

Welcome to CF!

I think I may have just responded to a post of yours in another forum!

There is definitely biblical support for not spending any money on the Sabbath (I'll look it up if you'd like). It just makes sense because if you're giving someone money, you're asking them to work FOR you on the Lord's Sabbath.

I could give you a list of the things I don't do on the Sabbath, but it wouldn't necessarily be a good fit for you. The Lord tells us to do His work on His day, and to not do our own pleasure.

For me that's watching secular television or talking on the phone about college, etc.

As you start forming the relationship that comes with spending an entire day with God each week, you'll find a nice fit for you, I promise. It's funny what God points out to us when we ask Him to.

I don't study on the Sabbath although there have been times when school has interfered with Sabbath anyway (because I worry about not getting it done). I'm going to have to be very careful about that since I start Nursing school on the 25th.

Just follow Christ's examples and you can't go wrong!

(WELCOME again!)

Hi beoffaith, welcome!

Be sure to follow the Bible's instructions and the Holy Spirit's convictions as to what is and what isn't acceptable to the Lord on His holy day. He said,

"If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." Isaiah 58:13-14

Trust hit the nail on the head when she said follow Christ's example and you cannot go wrong!

Hello all, I am not an SA, but my parents have become sabbath keepers.

I can share firsthand what they will and will not do.

They do eat, travel, use the phone, actually I have not found anything they will not do, but it must be God's work. If they are to buy something it must come from conviction of God for example, buying their son (my brother) the medicine he needed because of his cancer thereby all work in relation to the act of purchasing the medicine would be an ordained act of God. To cook or clean, again must be under conviction. We also talk on the phone, not of trivial things, but usually how well we are doing and how we have been blessed, fellowship is one important part of keeping the sabbath for them, so this is an ordained act, and they are very careful not to let the conversation stray.

That is just my 2 cents though.

So many people fill you with a list of things you can't do on the Sabbath. It becomes so overwhelming and burdensome, and can be a huge burden to manage. I recommend that you take some time to study it out for yourself. Pull out a concordance and look up the word Sabbath. Take some real time to pray along with this study, and God will bless you and show you the way.

Here are some things me and my husband enjoy on the Sabbath:

Studying God's word
Reading together
Taking a Hike
Visiting shut-ins or other people in need
Inviting people over for lunch
Relaxing
Going on prayer walks (walking through a neighborhood and praying for all the people in the houses as you pass by)
Giving old friends a phone call
Community Service
Picnicking
Craft Projects

There are so many other ideas. The main things to keep in mind are to seek God and His glory first and to rest. This day should not be a burden, but a delight
