  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yeah but if I dont know what it is, I dont know if it fits one of the carve-outs or not - and there's a bunch of them.

Probably 'fighting words' would have the most overlap with hate speech. But most of the explicit (and they are explicit) examples of such talk in Supreme Court cases have been ruled to be free speech.

Just about everything the Westboro Baptists has shouted and waved on signs, from 'God Hates Snappy Dressers' to 'Thank God for Dead US Soldiers' has been free speech.

"Lone dissenting Justice Samuel Alito likened the protests of the Westboro Baptist Church members to fighting words and of a personal character, and thus not protected speech."

And Justice Alito is almost always wrong about things, so there.

I dont. But you must because you opined that its protected. How could you say that if you dont know what it is?
I know that others have said that hate speech shouldn’t be protected. I’m wondering what’s meant by hate speech. If you don’t have an answer, then you, too, can wait for one.

Yeah youre probably right.

And speaking for myself I'd feel justified in firing anyone who says "God hates snappy dressers."

This topic came up in another thread. Some are saying that hate speech shouldn’t be free speech, while others have argued that free speech protects hate speech. I’m in the second group.

For those who think that hate speech shouldn’t be included in free speech, can you give a working definition of hate speech?

The tongue is located behind two rows of teeth, lips that can close watertight and yet
can cause so much damage.

How much more so if it were hanging outside?

What should one do then,

The mouth is the gate,
one should allow the gatekeeper to only open the gate for a purpose.

Not leave it open for gossip and slander.

From what?

I mean saying hateful things can have consequences which no special principle should automatically shield you from.
What is hateful to one man is truth to another.
Who gets to decide?

Each person gets to decide.

Until one in power decides that "hate speech" needs to be banned, and then decides for everyone what hate speech is.
