I do believe God works miracles in our lives, but that he often acts in a way that we cannot see or understand.
During my teenage years I had bought a pound of marijuana and I was caught by the police with it all wrapped up into quarters. Having recently lost my family in those days all I did was get drunk, get stoned, and ditch school.
I spent one night in jail. It is nothing short of a miracle that I got out of that with a warning instead of being convicted as a dealer (which it was all personal use) Somehow between Gods intervention and my stepfather having a word with the judge. There was a big fine though.
According to the old testament God is capable of hardening and opening hearts. He truly does work through us at times.
