It wasn't a serpent at the time.
Serpents don't have their legs removed; nor are they referred to as "beasts of the field."
Genesis 3:1a Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.
It is seen in the text that it was a serpent. It can be said that snakes are all serpents, but not all serpents have to be snakes. They might still even have legs, or wings, even any extra parts. Or they could be able to fly otherwise. The serpent in the garden there is the dragon of Revelation 12, where it is called the serpent, even if having legs, and even if having several heads. Yahweh had told Adam and Eve what they needed to know to be obedient as his children, with responsibility given to them as stewards in the world. They listened to the father of lies, the deceiver, and trusted what they heard, and chose to rebel against what Yahweh had told them.
