  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your take on it? Promoting witchcraft, promoting lawlessness, turning children away from God and tward Satan...

Or a good book that promotes standing up for your rights, fighting discrimination, listening to your elders and learning that everyone is filled with the potential to do good, make good chioces, and make a difference?

I like Harry Potter. What about you?

I dislike it intensely.

More for the fact it's contrived, manipulative nonsense.

Not unlike The Traveller and The Da Vinci Code. Two of those three do have an "anti-Christianity" premise, but atheistic novels aren't above been poorly written.

Bad writing is more offensive than any content some author can come up with.

Neither is any form of religious/Christian writing.

I like Harry Potter, It isn't exactly genius-class literature, but they are amusing to read, have an interesting plot line, and an overall good message.

It will not do any sort of emotional harm to any one reading them, but instead instill them with that sense of magic and wonder that humanity seems to be lacking these days.

Love the Harry Potter books, as well as the movies. Well thought out, good fiction, fun, provoking, and interesting.

The books have helped children to read more, and in this era of TV, that can be good.

Haven't read the books so can't talk about the writing. I like it because I think the movies are good intertainment. And anyway I like movies with magic in them.

Hi sinneD,

>>Nothing wrong with it.. no worse than "The Lord Of The Rings" or "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", which was written by CS Lewis, a great Christian author..

I've had this discussion with someone that is against the book from a religious point of view. He argues that non of these movies 'promotes' witchcraft by humans like Harry Poter does. In 'The Lord of the Rings' non of the magical creatures are humans and in 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' the witch is evil.

Absolutely :) Have read a plethora of Christian books that were horribly written. I threw them across the room with the same amount of gusto :)

Just curious, how? Please explain. I'm genuinely curious.
Her story about struggling for 4 years as she wrote it; her syntax is appalling; her character development is shoddy in the extreme; much of the plot has been ripped from other lesser known books. She found a way to tap into the angst of all kids and played upon it to an unparalleled degree. Contrived, soulless rubbish. Truly.

And happy to be! :p Gimme some rich, classic literature any day.

You Christians are retarded. It's just a fictional book intended for entertainment....much like your bible and the stories in it.
The irony...! Did you actually read any of the responses? Kindly quote the post from a retarded Christian saying it's anything more than shallow entertainment.

I understand that you're hugely angry at Christianity, but stomping all over a calm discussion spitting bile and silliness does little to further your cause.

I like Harry Potter. I've read all the books and seen all the movies. So has my daughter. My wife's read some of the books and seen all the movies. My son has just seen all the movies.

If this stuff promotes witchcraft, it certainly is doing a poor job. Not one of us has become a witch, nor have we shown any interest in doing so.

I'd love to learn how to play quidditch, though:D

The Da Vinci Code is indeed poorly written. Harry Potter isn't. Trust me - as an English lit. student, I can tell the difference. As for "manipulative nonsense", I've got a slight suspicion that your impression is based upon anti-Potter pamphlets rather than the novels themselves. Compared to the blatant and boring allegories of the Narnia-series, Harry Potter is a true gem.

Bad writing is more offensive than any content some author can come up with.
Indeed. That's why so-called "Christian literature" is usually so utterly sub-standard: the authors and publishing houses know that the label "Christian" alone suffices for their target audience.
The "Left Behind"-series, for example, is among the crappiest books ever published successfully, apart from a few penny dreadfuls.
