Ghosta and Goblins. Just start playing the Capcom Collection Vol. 1 and realized after playing this game for 2 hours why I have a traumatized childhood.
Yeah I can concur, that was quite brutal. I don't know if anyone played Warhammer: Shadow of a Horned Rat, but I could not finish that game for love or money. Every other game, I've been able to finish and I've never given up and gone, "Impossible!".

Basically I think it was the result of poor game design, as en route to the final battle, you had many options to boost your army by doing side-missions, however this made the subsequent missions harder as you took longer to get to that location and the enemy had longer to prepare and reinforce as a result. I did all the side-missions, 100% successful. So when I arrived at the last mission, I was faced with wave after wave of mummys, who are probably the most powerful and resistant army in that game. Also, I did manage to kill the Horned Rat, yet that didn't complete the leve. He wasn't very hard to defeat, 12 waves of mummys were. >_> *annoyed*

Other than that, the final level of Starcraft: Broodwars was really hard, in that I had to restart it about 20-30 times, and eventually managed to finish it after 9 hours playtime. o_O

Recently, games have been an absolute breeze. I can almost finish them without blinking. ;)

Any of the games that only gave you one life before "Game Over".
Like the original, unpatched Aliens vs Predator? That was pretty hard, but incredibly fun. :) For fun at the moment I'm playing Skibi's Tower Defence map for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. I can get to the final boss wave, yet they reduce your lives to 1 (give you gold in exchange to build with) and the boss attacks. Haven't managed to kill 1 of him yet (there are 4).

Oh! I just remember, Gene Wars... an old Bullfrog game with a stupidly steep learning curve.

Ummm… Ultima IX. Well not that hard but impossible to finish with the game breaking bugs. They then abandoned the patches and left it as a broken mass on the street. Thanks EA...

Pretty much any old school NES/SNES era platformer. Ghouls and Goblins, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Battletoads, Castlevanias etc... Heck, even Super Mario Bros 1-3 with warps are rougher than any modern games.

Everybody says Ninja Gaiden (xbox) and Gears of War are tough... HAH! Kids today have no idea just how easy they have it!
