Just watched the News and was shocked to hear that Mr Howard is going to spent $ 200Mill. IN ASIA on planting Trees.
I mean we in Australia with our Land erosion and very fragile Land, we need more then 200Mill. to spend on Trees.
Will someone explain this to me?
Norbie
I'm with you it makes absolutely no sense!

Read this.

The Prime Minister says the Government's plan to help South-East Asia reduce deforestation will have a greater impact on climate change than the Kyoto Protocol.
The Government will spend $200 million over five years planting trees and aiming to end deforestation, mainly in Indonesia.

Makes a tad more sense now eh....

Not realy. Try to think about the size of the Country for start, we are a large Continent, a very fragile one and if we don't do anything HERE!! we lost it.
Think about our Children what we give to them: a worn out Land? Ask our Farmer, they one who are still there, how hard this Fight is to grow something, and it's just not the Water alone, but they using more and more expensive Fertiliser. On the CWA Show They told us that 1 in 4 Farmer commited suicide.
Think also how long ago it was that a Government build someting FOR THIS COUNTRY?
Bridge - Opera House - Snowy Mountain Sheme - Telegraph to Darwin - Kalgoory Water Pipe. That's all - now a Government governs to the next Election.

what has labor done? At least John Howard sticks with his decisions and has done a lot more than what any of the Labor premiers could ever do.
So WHAT have Howard done good for OUR Country, I can't tell you one thing.
And of course this is the biggest Problem: he sticks with his Decision, so there will never ever anything done for the Environment.

Not a lot admittedly, and I'm no Howard fan. But what about the Alice Springs-Darwin railway?

Trouble is - things like this plan ( whether you agree with the idea of spending the $$$ in Indonesia or not ) will make more difference to the global climate than signing trendy pieces of paper at the UN. But it isn't sexy, and it doesn't meet the seeming desire by some environmentalists for incessent self-flagelation.

Here's another one - how about something we could do right now that would bring about a reduction in greenhouse gas equivilent to taking every single car in the USA off the roads.

How? - by putting out ( mostly man-made ) coal seam fires in China alone. Won't wait for that story on the evening news.

ummm, i this seems like an argument built off a very scarce amount of evidence.
