On this day, in 1809, Charles Robert Darwin was born.

He is always remembered for his vision. But it was also his meticulous attention to detail, and his incredible dedication, which enabled him to completely revolutionise our understanding of the world around us.

One day, on tearing off some old bark, I saw two rare beetles, and seized one in each hand. Then I saw a third and new kind, which I could not bear to lose, so I popped the one which I held in my right hand into my mouth. Alas! it ejected some intensely acrid fluid, which burnt my tongue so that I was forced to spit the beetle out, which was lost, as was the third one

On Jan. 22, Rush D. Holt, a Democrat who represents central New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, introduced a resolution designating Feb. 12, 2013 — Charles Darwin’s 204th birthday — as Darwin Day, “recognizing the importance of science in the betterment of humanity.”

Wow. You can pin it down to a day? It was a painfully slow process for me. I went from YEC to OEC to theistic evolution (none of these transitions were particularly painful, because I realized that science and Christianity can be compatible) to agnostic theist to agnostic-atheist, where I shall remain. The whole process from YEC to A-A took around a decade.

Most of that time was in the OEC camp, though.

Well, TBH, it was 5 years ago in mid to late February. I just think celebrating on Darwin's birthday is kind of fun.

Maybe some day we can replace the genocidal Andy Jackson on our $20 bill with Carl Sagan.

Back to the OP: Years ago, on my first trip across the pond, I made my pilgrimmage to Westminster Abbey and paid homage at Darwin's burial site. Just a few steps from Isaac Newton, as I recall. Very impressive. It's always intrigued me that the man who's ideas so challenged the authority of religion, is buried in a church.

The first ever international cricket match was the US vs Canada. True story.

As for Darwin, his significance was recognised before his death, to the point that the church had no choice but to accept his burial at Westminster.

Also, the C of E has generally been warmer to Darwin than many churches around the world. They even apologised for ever doubting him, although admittedly, it took them 150 years to do so!
