• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

How do you get a grip on your OCD? I think it may be what is bothering me, with all these constant blasphemies and doubts. I keep having thoughts about accepting the mark the beast and realised these might be from OCD because it is an unwanted obsession. What do you do to control it? (Besides medication I don't have any :()

I think realizing this might be ocd and not just you being a bad person with bad thoughts could do wonders to make you feel better and help you separate a potential illness and what you actually believe to be true.

I also have a strong suspicion that schizophrenia is one of my problems as well, both or either of those would cause me trouble. I think trying to handle these may help me straighten myself out, and truly see my spiritual position.

Well while I can't diagnose you most people who have schizophrenia can't diagnose themselves either. As the saying goes if you think you are crazy you probably aren't. This doesn't mean you aren't suffering from some sort of mental anguish or problem just its unlikely you have lost your mind or are psychotic, which schizophrenia is.

Yeah, I'm just asking for people's advice with obsessions and compulsions.

The advice I got from doctors when discussing obsessions was to sort of let the thought be and not to give it so much credit. Maybe you can try that? Experience the thought without judging the thought as good or bad but as just a thought like the thousands of others you experience on a day to day basis? Like you wake up in the morning and get a thought to brush your teeth and everything is fine then you get a blasphemous thought and alarm bells go off in your head but both are just thoughts just one you give power to the other you don't.

You give your blasphemous thoughts too much credit is what I'm saying. When they are just a mere thought like brushing your teeth or deciding what to eat. All thoughts are as harmless by themselves, only the blasphemous ones hurt you and bother you because you give them power to do so. But by themselves they are nothing and have no power. For instance if I were to make myself think what you think they wouldn't bother me or effect me in any way.

You know they're empty words though and I am very afraid of condemnation.

If a mere thought could erase what Christ did for us on the cross, and our acceptance of salvation then none of us would have salvation. Here you are worrying about bad thoughts when you got people out there not just thinking bad things but doing really bad things. I am sure you have done none of the bad thoughts you have thought of so until you do, don't worry about them. Who cares if you curse God with your mouth if you are saved and God knows your true heart and you love him and he loves you and he knows you are just coping with a mind that is off a little bit as best as you can.

This is good advice. That's precisely what OCD does...it takes a thought that most people would let slide through their minds easily, and latches on and makes it seem like there's a problem. Ignoring and/or facing the fears is the best (only?) way to actually get them to lose their power. If you treat them like a real threat, doing compulsions such as ritual praying, seeking reassurance, excessive research, etc., it only strengthens the obsession because it gives it validity. Ignoring them is the best route, or if they're really bad, then use ERP (exposure and response prevention). It's the opposite of what your brain is telling you to do, but it works. Please check out the following resources, and keep asking questions as needed!

I have virtually no knowledge of schizophrenia, but I also agree with other posters that OCD can make you feel like you're crazy when you're not. Obsessions have a way of taking over our lives and making us question our true selves, but deep down we're still the same, it's just the obsessions clouding our judgment. The great news is that with therapy (either from a professional or self-directed), you can deprive those obsessive thoughts of their power and start to feel more normal again. Keep up the fight, and keep reaching out for help as needed!

Ugh I too am over aware of the mark of the beast, I do not want to take it, so I study it to the max. Please know it does wax and wane after 2 months of terror I am FINALLY better and able to use my brain and reason, are doubts there yes always but they are not dominating my life. meds help I am on citalopram 40MG and took ambilify for a bit and that helped.... ambilify was a last resort it helped slow my mind, I only took it for 2 weeks, it is not something to be on for good too many side effects. Diet helps! check this out I have done this and oddly enough I suffer from low blood sugar, and seems that and OCD are linked Hmmmm.. --> Got OCD? Changing Your Diet Might Help
