Which best describes your view of Halloween?

  • I have no problem with the celebration of Halloween.

  • I think if you avoid scary or occult things, Halloween is okay.

  • I think you can do something like a "Harvest Festival," but nothing called "Halloween."

  • We should avoid anything related to the occasion, because it is an ungodly celebration.

  • The obligatory "other." (Explain.)

My son likes to dress up in Super hero costumes, etc. So we just let him do that throughout the year whenever it suits his fancy. That way he doesn't feel that he is missing out on something October 31st.

Gem is so excited about Hallowe'en. She has a mermaid costume for the school party, and an angel costume for trick-or-treating. We carved pumpkins this past weekend. We get three.. one for each of us. Hers is a ghost, and is carved in a white pumpkin. The other two are regular orange ones. Mine is crossed swords and a laurel wreath (kinda heraldic looking). Hunter's is a flag.

We've also been teaching her about Reformation Day (which is also October 31). So we've watched Luther, and have been learning "A Mighty Fortress" from our hymnal.

I think Halloween is a great day for the kids, and I can see the fun they are having going door to door. Frankly, I get a little tired of opening the door a hundred times and doing the same thing over and over, but I do it for them and because I remember what it meant to me at one time and what I meant to my kids in turn. It's innocent fun and nothing I'd oppose so long as the references to gore are kept under control. But it is mainly older kids who seem interested in that, not so much the younger ones for whom the day is more important.

I agree. Most of the costumes for younger children tend to be more innocent -- gummy bears and toys, angels, fairies (really big this year), ninjas, pirates, clowns... the basic costumes.


I think my favorite cheap costume was when I went to a party (as an adult) as a bunch of grapes. I wore black pants and shirt, and got a bag of purple balloons. I blew them up and safety-pinned them to my clothes.

Note: If anyone tries this, please remember to leave some clear space on your bottom... unless you want to stand all night like I did. *laughs*
