  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, so my daughter, Emily, will be 5 on Oct.24. She wants a Halloween birthday party (monsters, slime, gross looking snacks, you know). So, I wondering if you guys can help me out with some ideas. She will be having friends from our church (including our pastor's daughter) and I don't want to offend any parents with anything TOO Halloween-y. I thought about doing a Jack-O Lantern cake and some little pumpkin treats, but she wants some of the 'scarier' stuff, too (not too scary...these are little kids). Witches are out, but what about monsters?

So, I need some ideas...but also, do you guys think this kind of party will be appropriate? Would you be offended if your kids went to a Halloween themed party?

BTW, we do trick-or-treating so it's not a big deal to us...I know some Christians have an issue with it, though.

Thanks :)

Love, Heather

I would not have a problem with my kid getting a Halloween party invite. But, I'm like you, I'm not sure where to draw the line. I guess if it was me I'd just steer clear of potentially offending someone, unless I know for sure that no one would be offended. We have a similar situation at our house. My daughter received a very cute little halloween themed outfit with little ghosts on it. I've decide that she should not wear it to her Christian school just 'cause you never know who might be bothered by it. I don't think it's ever OK to flaunt our "freedom in Christ" lest we cause someone to stumble.

Maybe you could do the old standby Harvest Festival party. I was trying to do a search online for some ideas, but my computer is slow at the moment. Maybe I'll look for more later

You could have the kids wear their halloween costumes. Also, just try to have the food halloween themed. Blood and guts punch (punch with sherbert icecream in it), dirt and worm (chocolate cake with gummi worms), halloween pumpkin cookies, you know, all that sort of stuff.

I personally would not allow my children to go to a halloween party because of my beliefs. I suggest that you make sure everyone you invite knows what you are planning so they can choose. I dont judge, but I would be upset if I thought I was coming to a bday party and it turned out to have bad stuff. I think the biblical dress up party is a great idea.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I think I'm going to stick with the fall harvest kind of decorations...pumpkins and fall leaves and stuff. And then just make some gross looking snacks for the kids to eat. I found some really strange looking treats to make at www.familyfun.com. Chocolate slime and some cute little monster cupcakes and stuff like that. Keep the ideas coming if you guys have anymore :)

It may be gone from the stores now but when the Hulk movie came out, they made a version of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup that turned milk green (as well as tongues and ...well.... poo) but if you top it on ice cream they could have fun with that. It came in a giant bottle. We still have half of one in the fridge. My daughter calls it "Hulk Milk" which sounds pretty gross in and of itself.

There are recipies for some sort of ooshy feeling stuff using borax and elmers glue.

Activity A :Borax and Glue
For the class:

  • 4% sodium borate solution (Prepare by mixing one cup borax powder to 2 liters of water, shake well.)
  • food coloring (optional)
For each team of 3-5 students:

  • scales
  • 8--oz.paper cup
  • ruler
  • permanent felt tipped marker
  • graduated cylinder
  • quart--sized plastic locking bag
  • bottle of white glue
  • plastic spoon for stirring
http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=2686

It has a really unique feel, which is sure to delight young horror seekers, and by dying it various colors, you can pretend it's monster brains or something else. It's fun even if it's only white, and it also bounces sort of funny.

Jack-o-lantern guts:
Get one of those little plastic pumpkins like kids use for trick or treat
Mix cooked refirgorated spaghetti, some jello (already set), crushed oreos, gummy worms, stuff like that together and put it inside. Hide little prizes inside so the kids can stick their hands in it and get the prize. I doubt it would taste very good though:sick:

Dunking for apples is always fun:)

The worms and dirt snack is always a great hit with young kids.

You could do the old blindfold and guess the gross stuff game: Let them feel, blindfolded, stuff like eyeballs (peeled grapes) brains (cooked spaghetti) and stuff like that.

I went to a Bible-themed costume party in middle school and I thought it was hard to do and kinda unfun. Although I had fun dressing like Jezebel. I think that would be hard for a preschool or kindergarten age party.

Just put on the invitations something like, A Halloween Birthday for all the boys and ghouls...with pictures of funny ghosties and junk on it. Parents will get the idea.

Sounds like fun...can I come???:)
