I prefer humbuckers for distorted heavy stuff. Although with a little bit of gain on a bridge single coil can be nice also.
And I love the hollow glassy sound of a clean single coil in the neck. But I also like the warm bassy sound of a clean humbucker in the neck also.
I mean, it just depends

Humbuckers!!! I have one guitar that features the "stacked" humbuckers (they look like single coils), the bridge is triple stacked and the middle/neck positions are double stacked.

The only guitars I have that still have single coils are my Tele and my Fat Strat, and both sit in the closet waiting to be sold.

Stratosaurus,

I like both. They both have unique qualities about them. I have a Strat that on certain songs a Les paul won't fit right. And the opposite is true. Use a Strat on a Humbucking Style song and it will sound terrible. I Like the tone of Single coils better but I like the response and feel of Humbuckers better.

The othet thing about the HB's is the power. I have a Fat Tele & there is such a huge jump in volume level, when you from the SC to the HB, that it just about makes the guitar unusable. It's great for going from a clean rhythm to a full OD lead, but trying to make them balance just doesn't work to good.

Stratosaurus,

Yes, I use to have problems swirching between my Les Paul and my Fender strat. Eventually I made seperate patches on my ADA MP-1 for the Lester and strat with the volume adjusted in the patch for the strat so the overall volume is the same when I switch guitars. I use an A/B box to plug the guitars in. But now I have a wireless, so I'm not sure how I switch if I use it.
