Okay, so I really want to purchase an online RPG for my computer. (Yes I realize that there are more RPG's for the PC, but these are the only two I'm thinking of...I do not want any FF game. Nothing against it, I love their games, but I don't want that for my PC)

I know you don't have to pay extra every month for Guild Wars but I'm not worried about that.

I want the best game between the two so I was wondering if I could get your opinion.

(Unless there is another game out there that I don't know about that totally kicks both those in the butt! ;) )

Take Care!

World of Warcraft. Having played both, WoW is the more polished, more expansive, more engaging and better fleshed-out of the two. The old "you get what you pay for" applies here. Note that if you are extremely interested in PvP (to the point of not wanting anything else), Guild Wars may be for you because that is what the end-game amounts to. If you want a mix of PvP and PvE, go with WoW.

I kind of figured the whole get what you pay for thing would apply. And I'm really not that much of a PvP person anyways (Of course some PvP would be nice.)

Okay, so is there anything besides the game that I'll need or should get to benifit the game playing?

And hey, what's Darkfall, you didn't tell me anything about it so what doesn't help me!

World of Warcraft does feature a fairly robust PvP system (largely embodied in their Battlegrounds games), and their PvP system is getting a very significant update in the next patch.

Frankly, you should be just fine as long as you can run the game. A broadband connection is a big plus, and should you eventually decide to join an end-game guild you may want a microphone so you can chat with your guildmates on TeamSpeak or Ventrilo. For now, though, the game and a subscription should be all you need.

EDIT: I should add that it can help to know someone on your server to start so they can provide you with help when you need it (either monetary assistance or help with quests). If you know anyone personally who plays I'd suggest asking them which server they play on and creating your first character there. Alternatively, there are a number of people here who play WoW who could fill the same role.

That's cool, actually my friend plays so maybe she can help me out a little bit. And when would the next fix be?

P.s. do you suggest getting a controller? I've never been much of a keyboard gamer and IDK if that would be better/worse ;)

Plain keyboard and mouse are perfectly suitable for WoW. I got a separate keyboard for it because my usual keyboard is a weird ergonomic keyboard, and not conducive to hotkeys.

I have liked it a lot. I have zero interest in PvP, but I can pretty much ignore it and just play.

The next patch should be in a month or so.

I advise against getting a controller. You're going to need far more buttons than any controller will have in order to play properly. A keyboard and mouse work very well. You'd also find it quite difficult to type with a controller. ;)

I play both of those, but my favorite is Star Wars Galaxies. WoW is just too cartoony for my tastes, and really, the majority of the game is just glorified farming. It's kill x number of monsters, collect x number of stuff. Or find something by killing a random number of monsters until it drops. I think worst of all, you have to spend a lot of time walking from one place to another, and hunting for the elusive spawn of the monsters you're supposed to kill.

In Guild wars, there are a number of advantages over WoW. The music is much better, you can put a lot more detail into your not-so-cartoony character, and they don't skimp on scenery just to have no load time. In WoW, you'll notice that you almost never have to load, after the startup load. In Guild Wars, you have to load when entering and leaving cities. This allows for the much improved (and not so cartoony) graphics in Guild Wars. The missions are also somewhat more varied (not just glorified farming of dozens of different colorations of the same monster) and the team play is infinitely better. In guild wars, you have to have a party to do things, so the result is that it tends to be easy to find people who need parties.

Star Wars Galaxies improves on both of these in a few ways. It's like Guild Wars in that the graphics are good, but like WoW in that there is very little loading. Unlike both of them, there are spacecraft for the flyboys (or flygals) amongst us. The PvP is better as well. In WoW PvP consists mostly of ganking and dueling in mini-secnarios. In Guild Wars, PvP is dueling, and that's it. In Star Wars Galaxies, the Rebels and Imperials fight for control of cities, and entire planets. Otherwise its PvP is like WoW. Simply put, Star Wars Galaxies tends to have the best of both worlds, plus some. The only thing I dislike about it is that you can walk through most obstacles, though in some ways that can be a good thing. One time in WoW, I got stuck in a corner. It took me quite a while to find the auto-unstuck function in the help thing. STG avoids that problem entirely.

Edit: I believe you can play a trial version of Star Wars Galaxies and WoW, though I'm not sure about Guild Wars. I would recommend playing both of the trials before you decide.

Here's Star Wars Galaxies: http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/index.vm?destination=trynow
Here's WoW: http://teaser.wow-europe.com/index.html

You can download the Guild Wars client, but I didn't find anything about a trial access key, so I don't believe you'd be able to try it.

Have both, including the GW Expansion.

World of Warcraft will probably be more to your liking.

Never understood what people had against "cartoony" graphics. I find it generally helps gameplay because it lets you not take the game so seriously and have some fun.

Oh, and I can provide you with a 10-day trial key for WoW if you want. Just send me a PM with your email address.

I'm going to have to disagree with norseman on the graphics thing. Having seen both (though only played WoW), I can say that the graphics depend more on your system than anything. Sure, in the high end, Guild Wars may be better, but on the highest settings, I think WoW looks excellent. Not to the level of a single player offline game, but I'd say impressive nonetheless. And personally, I like to be immersed in my games to allow me to rp a bit, and no load times adds quite a bit more immersion than slightly worse graphics.

Also, as for the time, I've heard that WoW is superior in that. I have friends who have gotten to level 20 (max in GW) in a week or two without much trouble. In WoW, you can also get to 20 in a week or two, but the max level there is 60, and at those higher levels, it takes a long time (several days) to raise each one. And even when you have your character at 60, you can still go and do missions and try to collect the incredibly rare items. They have armor sets on there so rare that my friend, who has been playing for months, has seen someone with at most 2 or the 8 or so pieces. My friends who play GW all have at least one, and sometimes multiple, level 20 chacters with the best armor they can get.

I'm not trying to say one is better than the other, I'm just pointing out some other differences. From what I'm seeing, I prefer WoW, but really, the thing that can make those games fun is teaming up with your friends. So, if you don't have any friends who play GW, it might be better to go with WoW, and vice versa. I have a number of friends who play each one, so heck, I may end up playing both.

I've played both and WoW > GW. Granted I haven't played the GW expansion.

WoW - Much, much more depth. High learning curve. Considerable time investment. Much more community oriented with guilds, granted the vast majority of that community are idiots. Either lots of pvp or optional pvp, choice is up to you on server types.

GW - Easy to pick up and play. More PvP oriented. No monthly fee.

As other said, don't even thinkg about picking up a controller for wow. I use all 10 number keys, shift+#'s, ctrl+numbers, every key within reach of my left hand is assigned a hotkey, and I have 3 additional buttons on my mouse which are assigned hotkeys. I use every single one of them and I still need more!

When you're in an intense pvp or boss fight you really have to be quick with the keys, using your mouse to click buttons mid-fight is a big no-no. Like when a boss punts me 100 feet in the air and wipes my aggro I have to switch to zerker stance, intercept mid air, switch back to defensive, and taunt it back bafore my casters get eaten. Or when pvp'ing with my pally, being able to easily target raid members for cleanse/blessing of freedom to keep them from being snared makes a huge difference

Oh, and if you go Alliance, make a gnome with giant pink pig-tails. There is just something a 2 foot midget with pink pigtails swinging a 4 foot sword and pwning a 7 foot cow that never gets old. Yes, I'm a guy, and I'm not afraid to admit that I play a female gnome with pink pigtails.

Easily WoW.
I don't really count Guild Wars since it's not a true MMO. It's far too linear...I don't like the feeling of logging in and having to follow a strict path. in WoW it's more like "Hmm...what do we want to do today?" It's a much more open, living world.

I even enjoy the art style of WoW more...the first time I stepped into Ironforge and the booming music queued up I was in AWE....infact I literally said WOW in quite a few places I went to. The game is beautifully designed. I didn't quite get that feeling in Guild Wars.

That and GW feels more like a grind to me...in WoW once you get past level 15 you can take kill missions and skip the "collect X item from X creature" quests. Heck...you could do dungeon instances all the way to 60 :) And that's where the game shines...the dungeons are FANTASTIC.

Nah, man, on any server that's been around for more than a few months there are going to be dozens of fully decked-out level 60 characters running around in full Tier 2 gear. Heck, a lot of them have Tier 2.5 now, and a few are starting to get Tier 3 (though Naxx only came out some weeks ago). The armor sets aren't "rare" - they don't have low drop percentages or anything. You just need to get forty people together to kill the enemies that drop them. When you have a raiding guild working on high-end instances, those armor sets become anything but rare - you end up seeing anywhere from twelve to twenty pieces a night distributed throughout the guild.
