  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You leave her alone.

Please explain what I have done to provoke this attack of rage on your part, I simply asked this person what their beliefs were. Why is all of this hatred directed my way? I have in no way violated any tenants of your Christian faith by simply asking a question.

Aleister,

I am amused to see your nick. Welcome to Christian Forums - I have been a member a whole day, but they are great people so far. So you are Thelemic? Might have a chat some time, I have always enjoyed AC's irreverant humour and his often profound insights mixed with satire. A definite improvement on 'Wisdom while you Waite' and may of the other late 19th/early 20th practitioners of Ritual Magick. I was goiung to take 'Do What Thou Wilt With The Hole In The Floor' as my sig, but hey, I think you deserve it more than me.

And yes I am a Christian. :) And yes I am happy to chat about Book 4, Liber Aleph and anything else you find amusing. And no I won't try and convert you, but I might bore you to tears while disussing McGregor-Mathers, Yeats, or matters of equal irrelevance!

Nice to meet you.

I assume by borrowing his name, you respect him. how do you view the real ACs references to child sacrifice?

Taken from Magick in theory and practice.

“For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male child of perfect innocence and high intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable victim.”

CJ - Thank you for your welcome and as I see you are as well read as I have seen in someone else who might appreciate AC's works. Literature is literature no matter what belief it takes ...

Ammon - I had no desires to do anything un-Christian to this young lady, I simply found her choice of a SN on a Christian forum to be mildly amusing. I, unlike some may believe, have no desire to convert someone else over to my beliefs. As I have said before and I'll say it again, my beliefs are my beliefs and yours are yours, but at the same time we probably both see the same light only through a different pane of glass. My faith allows me to be steadfast in my beliefs, does yours? Since I am my own beliefs why would I ever question them? Have you ever questioned yours? If so then why? And as far as anything un-Christian, she could simply repent and be forgiven for her sins, is that not correct or do Christians no longer forgive?

I'll have a hack at that, as AC does not appear to be about.

He is deliberately being sardonic in this passage, and the rite in question refersa to the practice of masturbation. Check the footnotes: the numbers do not add up. Cowley was exploring the idea of sex magick, and this is just one more example of the self professed Beast's appallingly bad sense of humour.

Could this not also be applied to any religion, it is widely known that Aleister studied many religions, both Christ-based and otherwise? I do not see this as neccessarily an evil thing seeing as how there is no proof that such sacrifices ever occurred. Although, during the Spanish Inquisition, the Inquisitors very much believed that their souls were being granted a higher place in "heaven" by simply carrying out the executions. Those executions/sacrifices there IS verifiable proof of.

And no, I do not think bad humour excuses it. But it does explain it, as doies an understanding that Crowley was rebelling against a very harsh Christian upbringing. I have read most of the mans works, and am quite happy to discuss why I chose to embrace Christianity over a Thaumurturgical path.

Oh ho ho, touche ... very good point ... much of AC's work is misconstrued and must be read deeper into than simply for what the surface thoughts are ... well played. And yes, if you read much of his work, much of it is as much a mockery of what typical Christians and Catholics believe to be "pagan" ...

He was a Ritual Magician and Occultist roughly 1890 to 1945, a poet, mountaineer, mystic and self professed Beast 666 (the latter primarily for publicity purposes). He was massively influential on modern occult thought and most satanists pay reverence to him, but in my experience very few people in the occult underground have actually read him. Those who have tend to educated and witty people, and while i disagree with their philosophies, they are not satanists, and are generally worth talking to and debating with.

Crowley exemplifies the attempt to create a scientific view of religion: a sort of modernist mystic. He tried to find coherent sense in the ideas of magic, especially the Hermetic Tradition which is a sort of Neo-Platonic/Gnostic corpus which has been influential in much occult thought. One of his couplets sums up his world view -

'We place no relaince in virgin or pigeon;
Our method is science, our aim - religion'

I jumped in to this thread because i could see it rapidly reinforcing steroetypes of uneducated Christian intolerance, and because if our AC wants to chat, I intend to do him the decency of being polite. :)
