In talking to atheists on the site, I did have a thought that came up yesterday in the back of my mind, namely if the web site really is beneficial for some. There are number of bible verses that suggest that we are responsible for the knowledge we have. The more we learn, the greater accountability we have. Some folks here, I think have made crusading against Christianity, or theism in general a moral crusade, their life's mission, or perhaps one of their favorite hobbies. For these folks, does the site actually benefit them, or maybe rather does it simply help lead to them to be more hard hearted as they argue with dozens of Christians year after year, ultimately leading to their perdition if they continue down that path?
As far as the problem goes I don't have any good solution. In truth, I actually prefer a much more laissez faire way of doing things moderation wise, than what is done here, for the most part. (In the history of Christianity, some of the best theology, revelation and insight actually came as a direct result of conflict, so I prefer less regulation and much more tolerance of conflict than most.)
And of course their is the issue of how things are framed. Banning a cantankerous person after years and years from a web site simply gives that person and his friends the idea that Christians cannot stand up to his arguments, "truth" etc. And of course, such people actually can serve the Christian Community and cause (Because Christians will at some point will likely meet such people in real life, so it better to get an inoculation of them here in a more controlled environment than to be blind sided in an uncontrolled one).
Anyway those are just my thoughts. What do you folks think on the issue?
