  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From this site, if you go digging, you can find treasures like the one listed below, which are copyrighted. This is only a sample of Archimandite Ephraim's translations. Please go and see.

PSALM 22

A Psalm of David

Argument

The Psalm before us is sung in the person[1] of the nations as they rejoice that the Lord shepherds them. And indeed they expound the sumptuous feast that the One who shepherds them sets before them.

The Lord shepherds me. Those who are shepherded by him take pride in the Lord.

On a place of green pasture he has settled me. He has settled me in the beauty of a summer meadow, means the meadow of the spirit.

By the water of rest he has nurtured me. Water of rest is to be thought of as that of holy Baptism, which wipes away the burden of sins.

He has turned my soul back. When he had turned my soul back from the captivity of the devil, he guided me towards his commandments from death to life. It means the doctrines of the Gospel.

Your rod and your staff have comforted me. It means Christ himself. And ‘the Lord will send you a rod of power out of Sion’[2]. And ‘a glorious rod and a rod of majesty’[3]. The power that corrects is a rod and the help that comes through consolation is a staff.

You have anointed my head with oil. This is the mystical anointing.

And your cup inebriates me. Again it means mystical joy.

And your mercy will pursue me all my days. For those who have shared in the things already mentioned will be at all times in God’s mercy; and they will truly dwell in his house.

[1] In Greek ek prosopou. The word prosopon means the mask worn by an actor. Another translation, then, might be ‘in the character of’.

[2] Psalm 109:2.

[3] Jeremias 31:17.

Father Ephraim is an englishman, an athonite monk and a man of grace. I very briefly met him when he came down to Cambridge about a month ago (just kissed his hand and gave my name). His is rather old nowadays, all white hair, but looking OK mobility-wise. And with a sense of humour!

An impressive fact about his translations is that they all adhere to their byzantine tones, i.e. they can readily be sung exactly on the musical motive of the original hymns! Anyone with a knowledge of byzantine music or experience of byzantine worship will be able to confirm that.
