I have a friend who has been called to work for the people in Spiti valley, Himachal, India. The people there are mostly Buddhists and although Christian mission work went on for more than 200 years, there had been not even one conversion! The German mission had to be abandoned during the 40's because of the war and since then there had been no mission work in that area.God gave the burden to my friend and he went to work in Spiti under the guise of a businessman as any form of Christian work is strongly opposed there. After years of hardwork he set up an elementary school since the entire region had no schools imparting quality education. The school has been running smoothly for the last 8 years and the 53 children enrolled there are being given education based on Christian values. Despite severe financial hardships, my friend had refrained from sponsorships as he wants to be free from all harassments from the Indian intellegence departments that happen to foreign sponsored institutions. Instead, he ran a cafe with which earnings and the small amount of fees from the students, he paid the salary to the seven teachers he employed. Due to severe competition from the many mushrooming establishments, the earnings from the cafe had steadily declined over the months. Being ever enterprising,he raised funds for setting up a medical diagnosis centre in another town in north India. After obtaining all necessary licences and permits and purchasing many equipments, the clinic was scheduled to open in Sept 2004. But it has not happened till now since he ran short of around sixty thousand rupees (around 1400 USD) because of which he could not pay for some vital equipments he need to open shop. Now he is under severe pressure as his permit could be revoked unless he finds the amount in a month or so. So far no willing donor has come forward and we are still praying. Whoever reads this, say a prayer for my friend and his ministry for God's timely and perfect intervention. Whatever we are doing for the people in Spiti valley are for the sake of his name, to bring the light of his love to the people there. It will be a nightmare to see to see the school being closed down and years of prayer and hardwork go down the drain. Pray... God will not let that happen.
