  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

if people want to see the movie, fine, i personally won't, but i won't judge those that do, or look down on them. however, many Christians are saying that it is a good movie for Christians to watch, that it has a good Christian message.

that's all well and good, and the message of not being judgmental is very important to Christians. However, in the movie, does it ever show what a good Christian is like? Or are they all judgmental hateful hyprocites? Does the movie have the main characters being redeemed by their faith in Jesus? I just hear all these Christians who have watched it or will watch it and saying it is a good Christian movie, but from what I've heard about, I just don't see what the "Christian message" is. I don't want to get in a long debate about what criteria should be met for a Christian movie, but to me, unless the questions above are answered in favor of Christianity, I don't see it as a Christian movie.

I don't mind a movie making fun of the "bad" Christians, but unless their is some redeeming positive message in the end in favor of Christianity (religious pluralism doesn't count), I don't see it as a "Christian" movie. Some could argue a good movie, or moral movie perhaps.

You are missing the point of the movie. The point of the movie is not to show christianity as true or wonderful or anything like that. But rather that no matter how pious you try to be, nobody is perfect. I think every main character in the movie is shown to have some sort of flaw, simply because that is human nature, we are imperfect. We'll use our beliefs to justify our actions, no matter how wrong they may be. The closest thing you are going to get to a "good" christian in the movie, is the preacher's son, whom I can't think of the movie ever really portraying him as doing something wrong. He's the Christian one who doesn't care that the girl is pregnant, can't stand the over-zealous girl, etc...

I hated this movie. It did not "poke fun" at Christians, it completely insults and mocks us.

Oh I'm completely capable of laughing at myself, that is not the problem here. This movie's characters are not remotely reasonable or sensible. It sends the wrong message about Christians to non-Christians. I didn't see it the least satirical or funny. A satire should make me laugh not cringe.

The ending was unbelievable. They did not even profess Christ as Savior. It was as if they made their own religion, accepting homosexuality, premarital sex, and marital unfaithfulness. It was preposterous.

I agree with Twirlgirl. I was actually very miserable during this movie and had a mind to walk out more then once while it was playing.

All this movie did was poke fun and, by the way, it wasn't very funny either. All in all, I was very disappointed but I won't say anymore about it.

It doesn't even deserve that.

I had to repent after watching this movie. I couldn't stand it. We watched Harry Potter after that and it made me feel a whole lot better. How can you take a movie about christians serious when no one was reciting scriptures but did what they wanted. I for one know I will not watch this movie again and if people want to persecute me for what I believe and standing it up for Jesus, well it's about time, I'm finally doing something right in the Lord's church.

Thanks. I realize that it is not supposed to show Christianity in a positive light, but there are Christians claiming that it is somehow redeeming to Christianity, which I would argue against. Like I said, the movie may have a moral message to some, but to say that it is a message conducive to Christanity I just don't see

from the article above:

First of all, it's the non-Christians who exclusively provide all the lessons. For example, Cassandra's the only person to lovingly embrace Mary when discovering her pregnancy; Hilary Faye just abducts her and performs a forced exorcism. And when Hilary Faye eventually learns her lesson, it is Roland—a non-Christian—who tells her Jesus still loves her.

This is completely false. The pastor's son is a positive christian image in the movie. He accepts Mary when discovering her problem, accepts Mary's gay boyfriend, and also tries to guide his father. Also whether or not Roland is really non-christian is somewhat up for debate, while he tells Cassandra that he isn't Christian, it's unclear whether or not he says so simply to get her to like him. Obviously he is not an conservative christian, but by the end of the movie, he comes across as a more liberal christian, not a non-christian.
