• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My 85 year old grandmother has just recently (within a couple months) become very depressed for no understandable reason. She denies ever being depressed in her life before and no big life changes have happened. Grandpa died in 1978 before I was born. I feel like it's probably just the realization that's she getting on in years and that can probably pretty depressing in itself. Anyway, just wondering if anyone here has any experience with depression with an onset in later life and coping skills that have helped you or them. I want to help her but don't really know how. Thanks.

Agreed, Grandma needs to see a doctor and get checked out -- and if there's nothing medically the matter, then having a community outreach volunteer or a pastor/priest contact her to see how best she could be included in her community (Church, conversation, crafts, visits, etc etc) may lift her spirits.

My prayers for her and for your family. :crossrc:

Praying for your Grandma.
Some good advice here... try to get her interested in something, get her to join some group - you may have to go with her the first couple of times.

Depression can be a symptom of heart problems or even an impending heart attack. One of the "warning signs" of a heart attack is actually, weirdly enough, an impending feeling of doom or depression, and I definitely had that before my heart attack.

Grandmother definitely needs to see a doctor, and if she checks out reasonably well I think that depression at that age is probably not an atypical thing. Even the healthiest 85 year old is going to be slowed down a lot, I would think, and suffer some symptoms from general old age.
