...because I am sure to establish myself as the most hated person on CF with this thread. but having checked the current FUBAR bracket in the battle of the bands last night, then reading some recent posts today, it is painfully clear, to me at least, that there can be absolutely NO objectivity when either u2 or the dave matthews band is involved.

therefore i move to remove both of the bands from any future discussions about "greatest band," "best singer," "best album" or anything of the sort. We could have a "who had the best ever live recorded sneeze" and one of these two would win. it's become quite disgusting in my opinion.

and although i have already sealed my fate, I will still offer this disclaimer, i am not a hater of either of these bands, i simply think that the constituent base on this forum is decidely skewed in their favor, so much so that one might think that all of bono's and dave's personal friends are CF members and voters.

let the arrows fly...

OK, first of all, check the DMB-Pink Floyd battle out; DMB fanatics are voting for Pink Floyd. It's really quite amazing; I don't particularly agree with it, but it's amazing nonetheless.

Anyway, what did you really think would happen in the Battle of the Bands? Like it or not, it is a popularity contest, and has to be. Expecting more than that is just being unrealistic, IMO.

Between a week of no sleep and horrible work week, I've been really crabby lately. I said a lot of stuff that was out of line and I apologize for offending anyone.

The color ***** doesn't look very good on me and I'm not feeling great about it either, so I'm taking off for a few days and hoping that I feel better by the time I get back. Again, I'm sorry if I've really alienated anyone. We all have bad days and mine was just worse than most people today.

I resent the first sentence. There are plenty of posters in this forum (myself included) that have original thoughts and can put sentences together. I said plenty, not all, before you get uptight about it.

Besides, your post is completely off brettnolan's topic, so let's stick to the "original thought", shall we?

Seriously though, some of us just don't like to have to explain ourselves. And anyway, Andre is such an eloquent speaker and hits the nail on the head on so many things, theres nothing else I or anyone could possibly say. So I guess we've kinda created Andre our official U2 spokesman.

Please consider these things before comparing anyone on here to a robot or a monkey. Of I dunno, some people might consider being compared to a monkey as a compliment.

Whilst pointing out the speck in our eyes, you miss the plank in your own. Don't take yourself so seriously.

im confused. first we want to stop all discussion about dmb and u2 because too many people here like listening to them, and really they are terrible bands, so they don't have a right to be disscussed about in threads like "greatest bands" "best singer" Now, we are insulting the posters in this forum and calling them(us) thought challeneged. I thought this forum was to converse with other music lovers and have fun. but I guess I was wrong. Its true, we do live in a sad world.

Hey, everybody! I have a great idea! Let's make Axver, ps139 and nadroj the official Secular Music forum spokesmen! Then, instead of straining our tiny brains, all we have to do is put this in reply:

Or, in the unlikely event that we disagree, we can post this:

But of course, all we are actually capable of is this:

Think about it - no more time spent on such a time-wasting activity as thinking.

Gosh, I don't know why we are even arguing about this stuff. "DMB is great!" "No they're not!" blah blah blah. Why must we focus on what devides us? Can we not except that some people like dave matthews, u2, justin timberlake, the garage band next door , whatever, without condemnation? Granted, theres nothing wrong with disagreeing with some on their musical tastes, but all I see is a constant denouncing of bands, and it gets old after a while.

So some people think Dave is the best singer on this known planet.
So some people think Bono is the best singer on this known planet.
Some people think thier older brother singing in the shower is the best singing on this known planet.

Theres nothing you can really do about it, exept live with the differences.

Like DMB said, this is supposed to be fun.

Anyway, regarding the OP. Any Battle of the Bands is going to reflect personal proclivities to certain music or artists, so there's no such thing as an unbiased poll. We're just having a little fun here, nothing more and nothing less.

Now the thread title...everytime I see it I am going to think of Christopher Walken.

But I like thinking...it is a very worthwhile pursuit...

Diversity is what makes this forum work. Diversity of thought, musical tastes...and so on; sure a few of us share a like of a few bands, but seriously what is the problem with that? As for original thoughts, I think that comment was unnecessary and comes close to breaking CF rules, and should be edited or deleted. But in the long run there is one thing you'll never be guaranteed of, and that's a 100% agreement on anything, and for me that is great. If we weren't allowed to be original and have differing opinions, then imagine how dull and uninspired this part of CF would be. Now let's stop, take a deep breath, and continue without fear of being lambasted for our musical preferences.

Hmm...this means that the results of the battle of the bands tell us nothing. Therefore, we are simply left with the realization that we should consult the majority of all other polls conducted and conclude that the Beatles are the greatest band ever.

Cheers to this thread...I have enjoyed the responses.

maybe i should have made the POINT bigger as no one can seem to hit it.

not saying (should have known you'd never make it to the disclaimer) the two bands are terrible or even bad or even just so so. just saying that there seems to be no point in pitting them, their members or their work against that of other bands, because the result is a foregone conclusion.

it's like going to a star trek convention and commissioning a poll to see what the greatest sci-fi movie ever was.

I see your point more clearly, but I do not agree. For every Dmb fan I see in this forum, there is a person here who doesn't like them. This isnt a dmb or U2 forum. and many posters here do not like neither, and have made that very clear. If what you say is true, Dmb should be making it to the final battle and so should U2. even if all the dave fanatics had voted for dmb in the last battle, they would have lost to Pink Floyd. If I missed your point again, I apologize.

The POINT is that this is a forum on the internet, not the G8 Summit. If you don't like what's going on here then don't participate.

While I'm flattered that you think so highly of my opinion, your post shows exactly why I hold my most fundamental opinion about music-- that its "quality" is completely in the eye of the beholder. While I believe in that opinion's truth, part of the reason I believe in it is that it allows me the freedom to be nice and tolerant to posters that think differently than I do, which is of the utmost importance to me. I see none of that attitude in the above statement of yours.

If nothing else, you are slighting many of the posters here, who have well-formed opinions about music, and can put together many coherent sentences (and sometimes too many ). That's enough reason, IMO, to retract what you said, or at least support it a bit more.

Edit: Actually, on second thought, don't support it. I'd rather this thread not turn into a witch hunt of so-called "robot drones."
