Gov. Gavin Newsom thanked President Donald Trump on Friday for coming to Southern California to tour the devastation left by the fires this month, marking their first face off since starting an ongoing online feud over the wildfire damage.

Trump traveled to Southern California on Friday to scope out damage from the recent wildfires that destroyed thousands of acres and more than 10,000 structures in the Los Angeles area, and claimed the lives of nearly 30 people.
Newsom was seen waiting on the tarmac for Trump before he exited Air Force One. The two shook hands, and Trump appeared to tug on his arm - a power move he has been known to pull on world leaders.
"Thank you first for being here. It makes a great deal to all of us," Newsom told Trump after they met on the tarmac of LAX in Los Angeles just after 3 p.m. local time. "We’re going to need your support, we’re going to need your help." He added that Trump was with California "during COVID, I don’t forget that."
The encounter marked the first face-to-face interaction Newsom and Trump have had since he was sworn in as president on Monday.

Trump said he believed he appreciated Newsom coming out to greet him after he arrived, adding "I think you’re going to see some very good progress" on the fire recovery.
"We want to get the problem fixed," Trump said. "It’s like you got hit by a bomb."

Making reference to some of the blame he had placed on Newsom and other California Democrats for not being properly prepared to handle the fires, he added, "We’ll get it permanently fixed so it can’t happen again."

"We have to work together to get this really worked out," Trump said during a meeting with Los Angeles officials. "I don't think you can realize how ... devastating it is until you see it. It's incredible. It's really an incineration."

It was Trump's first presidential visit to California since taking office and came after his threats to withhold federal aid to the state in exchange for a change in water management and implementing voter identification requirements.

But during a roundtable meeting with residents and officials on Friday evening, his tone was much more subdued. He declared a national emergency, pledged to waive or expedite any federal permits needed for rebuilding, and did not mention specific conditions for federal aid. He also said he would look into the possibility of waiving tariffs on building materials.
"I'm going to give you everything you want," he told the group. "I'm going to give you more than any president would have ever given you."
The trip to Los Angeles was part of a broader national disaster recovery tour. Earlier Friday, Trump visited North Carolina to inspect damage after Hurricane Helene ravaged the area in October.
Trump landed at Los Angeles International Airport midafternoon and after briefly speaking with Gov. Gavin Newsom on the tarmac, the president and First Lady Melania Trump embarked on their tour of the destruction in Pacific Palisades, surveying neighborhoods by helicopter and foot.
The president did not visit Altadena, where the Eaton fire carved a deadly and destructive path. The firestorms burned more than 16,000 structures, including many homes, and killed at least 28 people. Estimates of the cost have topped $250 billion.

I have to admit I am surprised, but props to Trump. Glad to see he responded to the devastation in an appropriate fashion. Hopefully next time we can skip the political posturing that preceded his change of heart.

Wow, why all of the apparent negativity? President Donald Trump is doing something that will help the people of LA County and southern California, y'all.

If we are to take him seriously, then it would be helpful he didn’t make contradictory statements offering help for disaster areas and also that he would like to eliminate the organization entrusted with delivering that help.

The questions about how to fix the failures of FEMA in order to improve that organization's efficiency ... or to find better methods and better state agencies to manage long term and short term disaster relief belongs in another thread, IMO.

FEMA is like unto a standpipe.
A standpipe is the interface betwixt a pumper firetruck and a building equipped with “sprinklers”.

As money flows from the Federal government FEMA, interfaces with the State and local officials (with emergency systems of their own in place and awaiting the self-same monies), FEMA also has staff to help overwhelmed local officials to get through the worst of their disaster, but they’re not there to “take over”.

Plus the stuff about aid being conditional on enacting right-wing political policies.

Some of our 50 states are better equipped already with trained people and resources than others and don't want to have to wait for FEMA money and resources to be funneled through FEMA to local county, city, and state disaster areas. How many residents of North Carolina are still suffering as a result of Hurricane Helene several months afterwards? Are areas in North Carolina worse off than hurricane disaster areas in another state, for example Florida? I believe the answer to that question is "yes." Should FEMA be a lot more efficient and successful in helping the people in disaster areas recover from the disasters? IMO, the answer is unequivocally a "YES."

The post was nice and well composed thank you for explaining clearly and concisely that we’re all fine with government money going to who those who need it. But eliminating the government’s agency that does that, seems counterproductive…what? they’re going to send White House interns out with blank Treasury checkbooks?

Goodness no, do you know how expensive sending interns out? Air fare, hotels, food? No, if they want money, they can come to Washington and ask for it in person.

How can the graft and corruption happen when there's established policies and oversight?

That's great.

But I gotta tell you the idea that they are going to fix it so "it never happens again"....that's not an addendum that an informed intelligent person would say.

BUT you don't have to be informed or intelligent to help people and I'm glad trump went to cali and showed his support.

People will always have negative things to say about President Trump. Even if he does something good. It is what it is.

How thoughtful of him. I'm. happy to see he is doing his job.

TRUMP cures cancer, and puts thousands of doctors out of business.
