According to an Associated Press article, “the U.S. Education Department has cut the money for captioning nearly 200 TV programs.” The government based this decision on a 1997 mandate from Congress that only requires the captioning of “educational, news and informational” programming. The cuts include documentaries and other programming on mostly cable networks and PBS.

Here is a link (including other good links) to MICHDHH if someone wants to read about it.

I love CC. I hope it stays around.
Also, this is how language filters know what to mute out. It would stop all filtering processes.
I didn't realize that.

If you want to speak of discrimination... This cut will affect all deaf and HOH persons who use CC. I imagine major cable news, like FOX and CNN, will pay for their own. But I will miss it on PBS and others.

Do I take it you are deaf, Rose?

For you & all other deaf folk here, let those of us who hear persist in believing prayer till the healing miracles come

To help folk understand the need, deafness is often said to be the most socially frustrating, because many folk avoid deaf folk, as they are embarassed to speak up

Also because many folk treat deaf folk as being daft

My dad was a very clever man

So is Rose, if you read her other posts as well

Rose, I clicked on your name from the threads @ praying for the persecuted in China, India, etc

The 1 @ folk physically challenged is especially helpful

Must stop for tea, but 1 closing thought to help:-

Speaking clearly is more helpful than speaking loudly

God bless!

Ian

Thank you very much, Ian. I am hearing impaired, so I have difficulties, and I do rely on lipreading and a hearing aid. I was raised by my grandfather who was totally deaf. Closed captioning is necessary for me and I sure hate to see it reduced.

Boy...are you ever right about "speaking clearly is more helpful than speaking loudly." People speak so FAST! Yelling at me won't help me understand them, but forming their words slower sure will so I can lipread. :)

I so totally agree with that as well. Growing up going back and forth to the ENT doctor and then going through 9 ear operations (ironically, my doctor was the real life dad of Elaine's boss, John O'Hurley Jr., on Seinfeld) has definitely put a damper on my hearing. Last I recall I'm 43% or 48% tonal deaf. I absolutely love CC and would hate to be without it. Yes, I can hear, but sometimes I cannot make out all the words that have been said so havcing the CC on helps out tremendously. They wouldn't be doing us a service by getting rid of it on some TV programs and shows. In fact, I'd rather they propose a motion that all shows and programs are required to have CC, not the other way around.

God bless!

Me too! Most all new televisions have CC capability now; you would think that might send a message to the governmental powers that be, eh? :sorry:

I agree entirely. There has to be a petition or something out there. Does anyone know of any? It would probably be on a site for the deaf, of which I'm unfamilar. Please post link, if you know of one or someway to get it changed.
