  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"12 Monkeys"; a movie about time travel and a disaster.
(Do your parents let you watch R movies?)

"A Trip to the Moon" -The French win the Space Race 60 years before it started.

Weird. I'm writing an essay on Trip to the Moon as we speak.

Anyway, I second the nomination of 12 Monkeys.

And if you want things that are rated PG: Well, there's Armageddon, Contact, The Andromeda Strain...

If you don't mind some older stuff, The Day the Earth Stood Still and When Worlds Collide are a couple favorites of mine. 2001 is awesome, but I'm not sure I would have appreciated it at your age.

-Star Wars movies(mainly the original triology, but just watch em all)
-Riddick movies(Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick)
-Serenity(prequel to Firefly series)
-Aliens
-A.E.
-The Matrix movies
-Stargate
-The Terminator movies
-12 Monkeys

..you are probably to young to watch half of these but start making a mental list for the future.

EDIT: I'd also defintely suggest Jurassic Park(the original)

Also, I would strongly urge you to read Dune before watching an adaptation. None of the film versions compare.

Another family-friendly one I thought of: The Little Prince. Yeah, it's a kid's story in some ways, but it's a classic one. And it's always fun to go back as you get older and look at things from a new perspective.

Forbidden planet is a classic if a little out dated by the todays FX, but I grew up with it so I would say it is a fantastic movie.

As others have said.........watch Firefly a series but a very good one, I would also then watch serenity not because its as good as the series but because it wrapes things up.

11 eh well stuff like Aliens is not a possibility for a while then, flash gordon is great, really cheesy as crawfish said, but great non the less.

Stargate isn`t bad.
War of the worlds, the original is good.
Bladerunner, allthough having said that you probably arn`t old enough for that yet, one for later then.
Close encounters is good, allthough it lacks the destruction and war stuff.

And if you don`t mind Anime then I would also recomend;

Nausicaa of the valley of the wind and Laputa castle in the sky, not everyones cup of tea but I like them.

I thoroughly recommend Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, even if you don't particularly care for anime. The vision and story are very top-notch.

And the manga version of it is even deeper and for more in depth.
