  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

William Barclay wrote a series of commentaries on the entire New Testament; look for his book on Romans. He also wrote a book on "The Mind of Paul" which will reference Romans. Barclay was a very well-respected bible scholar so would be an excellent source.

A great place to look for material would be a religious college or seminary library, if there are any near you.

Silent, I do not. My professor is pretty strict about the scholarship quality of the sources so I'm afraid it wouldn't help in this scenario. But I agree they are great to have.

Steve, I'd like to check it out! I have not heard of this author.

Martinius and Ebedmelech, yes! William Barclay and John Murray would be excellent. Thanks for the link, added that to my list.

New Interpreters Bible, volume whatever it is. The Romans commentary is by NT Wright. A must-read perspective.

Glad to assist!

In my collection, I have "Romans: The Gospel Of God's Grace" by the late Alva J McLain.

It's a good work.

Leon Morris and NT Wright are always good choices. May I suggest two additional commentaries that I have used in the past? (I'm assuming here that you are looking for good scholarly-type works.)

Doug Moo in the New International Commentary series
Thomas Schreiner in the Baker Exegetical series

Also, please note that there is a website which does a great job of listing and rating commentaries. I still can't post links, but it's simply bestcommentaries.com.

Good luck!

The above suggestion prompted me to take a look at Wuest's book, which I've long had in my Logos library but never actually opened. It's interesting...sort of a mix between an expanded translation (providing nuance) and a commentary (providing theological explanation). Of course, the latter aspect makes me wary of the former, and I'm not sure the two really belong together in any "objective" way. But the portions I skimmed were quite good, even if his theological perspective is rather different than mine. He does seem to mention some scholars who disagree with his perspective, which is a good thing (cf Rom. 8:29). I would suggest it as worthy of a look, but certainly worth checking one's conclusions elsewhere.

Thanks for the post!
