  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nearly everything I listen to is "non-mainstream"-- what defines "mainstream" anyways? Some of my favorite underground acts (that are still active-- performing, releasing albums, etc.):

Escapade
Gong
Embryo
Acid Mothers Temple
Rapoon

I just got their new album to review. I haven't listened to it yet though. I didn't know people had heard of them though.

My top five:
1. The Beatles
2. Sufjan Stevens
3. Radiohead
4. Pedro the Lion

and the fifth rotates between 16 Horsepower/Woven Hand, Wilco, Pavement, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and lately Ween.

I seriously need to just go out and buy some Sufjan Stevens.
Yes you do.

I'd burn some for you, but the more I think about it, the album artwork is just as much a part of his albums as the music itself. Plus you need to have those albums to pass on to your children someday. Get on it!

Believe me, I've thought about asking, but I agree. The artwork for his albums is great stuff, and I'd be missing out for sure. Even if I had burned copies, I'd probably end up going out and buying the cd's anyway.

i heard sufjan once, and i liked him,

but 2 of my friends, who have music taste that's similar to mine, swear up and down that sufjan is the worst musician they have EVER heard.

of all time.

i don't understand it.

i would say phish is underground music. They have thousands of fans, and everyone's at least heard of them, but they're not played on the radio, and they're not on mtv, and throughout their career, they kept it pretty rootsy.

them and the beatles. way underground.
have you guys heard of the beatles?

Well, if you want something to hold you over until you get a chance to purchase them for yourself, PM me with your address.

Wha?

How can they honestly think that? It's a sad day when I can turn on the radio and hear Good Charlotte, Creed, Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, and Simple Plan and yet there are still people purporting that Sufjan (a man who writes and performs music for just about every instrument imaginable, and has lyrics that are thought-provoking and powerful as well as intimate and insightful) is the worst musician EVER.

Seriously, check him out for yourself. There are some people that can't get into him. But I think if you're honest, even if you don't like it, you'll appreciate his musicianship. Check out Illinois; it is brilliant. Or if you are into folkier stuff, try Seven Swans.

i dunno about the top FIVE...but the TOP band is Hillsong's UNITED

United, while good songwriters for being such a young group of musicians, is far from being the TOP band. They haven't done anything different or original for 5 years+.
