  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've looked all around this forum...maybe I didn't search far enough, but anyways...
I'm looking for a good manga. The only series I read all the way through was Rayearth, and I'm wanting some suggestions.
I'd like a series that I can read (15), and my littles sister (13), and feel like I'm not reading something I shouldn't be.
Any suggestions?

What are your parameters? Are you trying to avoid just a lot of fighting or gore or sexuality or occultism, or all or some of the above? What do you like?

For instance, Kenshin is full of history and fighting with hints of romance. Very good stuff here.
Fruits Basket is way kewl too. With a bit of ESP (very little)
Azumangadaioh is awesome though I could do without a certain male teacher...
Maison Ikkoku is pretty good and tame.
One Pound Gospel thus far I've read is o.k.
.Hack is a lot of fun too.

Child's Toy: I was first introducted to this series through the anime, only later on was the manga brough over to N.America. The series proper is still not liscensed in N.America so fansubs are not hard to find online. It is a show of contradictions in away. It is mercilessly sugary on the surface but is quite profound.

The story is of a grade 6 student, Sana who is the main actoress on a TV show. The tale follows the adventures of her regular life. This includes a bully classmate which then turns into a... I won't say romantic interest (these are grade 6'ers but there is some aspect of greater relationship between them), her manager (who she like to sleep with, but not in that way) her adopted mother (although later in the series her real parents nudge their way into the plot which makes for some good angst.

It would be suitable for yourself, or your sister.

Azumanga Daioh: You must get this. This can be found as a series of 4 manga or a standard 26-ep anime series. It details the lives of a number of girls as they go through HS. It is done in a Sienfeld format, there is no actual plot of the series. It simply relates what happened - coherence be damned.

It would be suitable for yourself, or your sister.

Clamp: This is a group, not a manga per se. They spew out enough in-bred manga which spawn equally in-bred anime there are a few in their cannon that would work for you. They are the people who did MKR which you have read.

I liked Chobits. And even then I found it somewhat inbred.

**

Those are the two that come to mind. Then again since I am 24 I really have no sort of censor when it comes to what I read.

I would recommend some of the other Clamp series, but if you're trying to avoid reading something that "you feel like you shouldn't be," some of their series probably aren't such good choices. Cardcaptor Sakura is probably still my favorite. Their newer series Tsubasa is really good too.

I would second the recommendation for Fruits Basket. The language can be fairly coarse, but I think it's worth it. Also second the recommendation for Rurouni Kenshin. It's kind of gory, though--lots of severed things.

Perhaps Alice 19th, which is maybe a little darker...edgier...not sure what word I'm looking for here, but we like it quite a lot.

Many of the other stories that my wife and I like would contain more questionable elements, so as 1freespirit suggests, you should be more clear as to what kinds of things you'd like to avoid. Then we could make better suggestions. Happy hunting.

Again, Fruits Basket should be fine. I don't remember anything bad in that other than a little swearing.

Rurouni Kenshin is good, but it gets pretty violent and bloody at times.

Alice 19th is pretty dark and I think there may have been some questionable elements. Imadoki! Nowadays (another Yuu Watase title) is okay for the most part. It brings up some real issues (like teen pregnancy and abortion) but doesn't glorify them. I don't think there is anything too bad in that one, plus it's short (only five volumes).

Card Captor Sakura should be fine. One character is suggested to be a lesbian, though. Most CLAMP titles should be fine, but I'd avoid X/1999, Chobits, and Legal Drug.

Hikaru no Go has nothing innappropriate in it and its pretty good.

1) Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. (it's the best that one has ever seen.)
Very clean too.

2) Kenshin

3) Ranma 1/2
4) Inu Yasha
