  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Good anime/manga deviations?

I'd like to use this thread to discuss good anime/manga deviations, in the vein of Berserk or Claymore. I don't generally branch out into a lot of genres, so beyond the select few I'm reading, I don't know of many long arcing stories that didn't get the full anime treatment. I have a hard time getting into manga that is directly sourced into the anime I've already seen, and vice versa. What are some other more popular shows that deviate from the source material quite a bit? This doesn't necessarily mean in length, but can also pertain to story (short manga, short anime, same characters but varying stories, etc.).

Pretty much any visual novel adaptation was altered in differing ways from their source material, simply because you can't plausibly portray all routes equally and have a coherent show. Either one main route is emphasized with some plot elements from the other routes (such as in Tsukihime, regardless of the meme...generally speaking, the anime only really covers Arcueid's plotline, and the meme is mostly upheld by fans of the other routes), or mini-arcs are used to skim over the other routes before focusing on the pairing most agree is the canonical one (such as with Kanon).

Many of the light novel adaptations could also count, seeing as how notable ones (Haruhi Suzumiya, Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai) aren't completed in novel form yet or are unlikely to be adequately finished in anime form because the length of the series run doesn't allow for it. Thus, to finish the plotline, a return to the original material is needed. Although translation of Ore no Imouto to English just completed vol.1, so the anime is already outpacing it; the Japanese is already up to vol.7, though. In Haruhi's case, all 9 of the released volumes have been translated in some form, and both anime seasons+Disappearance movie only cover ~half of the novel series' contents. I don't know if additional movies or anything will follow, though. Then there's also the question of whenever book 10 will get released.
