  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I saw the preview for this movie prior to Son of God. It looks pretty good, but I have not heard any reviews yet.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie, I have a feeling it's going to be about as realistic and helpful as a chic tract. AKA portrays nothing realisticly, and gives christians the wrong idea that a quick sound bite, or such is some how going to save the day.

What part of RL does this movie show? What colledge professor would A) Base his grade on not believing in god, B) wouldn't get fired on the spot, or everyone walk out. It's a strawman movie that will do more harm to christianity then good.

8 million on an opening weekend isn't a good sign at all. Most "good" opening movies rake in about 30+. 8 million is like 6th place..

Keep in mind that this movie had a limited release, though. It was only released in 780 theaters opening weekend, and it made an estimated $9,217,013.

The second weekend it played (this weekend) it made an estimated $9,075,000 and actually expanded to 1,178 theaters. It only dropped 1.5%, which is very, VERY low, and very good. Now this may have to do with it showing in more theaters, but still. Most movies drop at least 50% by the second weekend.

So God's Not Dead's actually doing very well.

I agree - you have to look at the number of theatres it is showing in and also consider the production budget, which I heard was around only $1-2 million.

If you compare it to a movie like "Pompeii" which had a budget of around $80 million and only opened with $10.3 million in 2658 theatres, it's easy to see how successful this movie is by comparison.

We saw it last night, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it (overall).

It seemed too neatly packaged, and conveniently scripted. It just doesn't seem that life works that way.

Athiests aren't usually gruff and mean-spirited, in real life (not in my experience, anyway). Usually it's the opposite, and it's mean-spirited and judgmental Christians that have caused them to become atheists (coupled with a situation like this professors). IOW....."where is the love?" that they expected from God.

I don't know. It just didn't seem to give real answers. I tried to watch it from an unbeliever's perspective, and it seemed to fall a bit flat. I also thought the cars not starting was kind of annoying, for some reason. It seemed to make prayer (and faithful actions) out to be some sort of magic trick.

well this is what I often call Christian myths, they are nice warm stories that are meant to inspire Chrisitans to go out and save the world, but have no basis in reality and will just cause problems when the Christians get smacked with reality.

Look at chic tracts and such, how often do these and other things portray disproving chrisitanity or converting people to Jesus, especially other religions and such as only needing a couple of nice soundbites that sound great to Christians, but anyone else will just ignore.

Christian Post carries an article on this as well. It's exceeded expectations given it's second week tally is now at near $22 million.
'God's Not Dead' Movie Surprises Again, Exceeding Expectations at Box Office

I'm not a big Kevin "Herculese" Sorbo fan, but I think that 400 more theaters have been added to it's show schedule that that's a pretty good sign it's being well received.

Sounds like one more film that will drive people away from even considering your God.

It is people like you that sometimes cause atheists to reconsider their position.

And thank you for pointing out we are not gruff and mean spirited.

I completely agree.

Actually.....these sorts of things (IMO) *can* lead to a person turning away from God when that reality hits (sort of like the professor's story in the movie). That was something I *did* like.....that the atheist portrayed in the movie had come from a church-going background. That much seemed realistic.

That's so touching, Keith.....it makes me cry. I take that as a huge compliment (saying that it's people like me that sometimes cause atheists to reconsider their position). TBH.....*all* the atheists I know are compassionate and kind (and I can't say that for the majority of Christians I know.....unfortunately). I can now add you to that list that proves that even more.

Some consider me compassionate and kind, but I do have a nasty streak.

It would be a very foolish thing to try to harm a member of The Society of Friends in my presence at that would bring my nasty side out. (I owe a bit to the Quakers, specifically their selective service committee).

I believe we can't truly love well without also hating well (know what I mean)? Hating things like lying.....betraying friends/family....cruelty....injustice. Some may call that a "nasty side".....but I consider it just part of loving well. Protecting others against harm, I think, is part of being compassionate and kind.

It makes me think of something I've seen people state about different things, like the creationism/evolution debate, the stance some Christians take are more likly to create atheists then christians, when they have this hard line of, "Our way or no way" many will see that the other side is making more sense and not needing to lie as often about things. Like this movie.

Gahhh...I forget who said it, it was on one of the senate hearings on drugs where one guy was like, "If kids know your lying about how dangerous pot is and making it seem worse then it actually is, whats to stop them ignoring you on actual serious stuff."

A lie, or a deception and such is only good as long as the facade lasts. If you build something on lies, it may support someone for ever, but if it ever fails there is nothing to catch them.
