We are commanded not to take the Lord's name in vain. Isn't He talking about His sacred Hebrew name, Y--H? Is it really necessary to write 'G-d' instead of 'God'? 'God' isn't His name. I don't have any information to back it up, but I bet that 'God' may have been the name of a pagan god before it was used to refer to the god of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by English-speaking people. In the same way, Allah was the name of a pagan god before the Muslims used it to refer to their one god. I've read that some Arabic-speaking Christian churches use the word 'Allah' to refer to God, the Father. Couldn't names like 'Zeus', 'Odin', and 'Jupiter' have been adopted just as easily as 'God'? Why is it necessary to write 'G-d'?

Actually any word that we use to describe God has its roots to a language. Take God for instance, it has its roots to: Middle English, from Old English. See gheu()- in Indo-European Roots.] and the first english bible was written in the late 1300's. My point is men have created every word of every language. I think a Loving God that is forgiving has more things to worry about than what we call him. But of course since I speak english and christian I use God. Any other word seems unnatural to me and every langauge has its own little story like mine.

The word god is merely a title like president or king.

Even with a capital 'G', it is still a title as is President with a capital 'P'.
Actually, the word "god" is an ordinary noun. It identifies something that is, or has been, worshipped. For example, the sun and moon are, or were, gods. In a sense, I can say I believe some gods exist, albeit without some of the attributes once ascribed to them.

The word "God," as you say, is a title. It refers to a particular god, the god of traditional monotheism.

Ok, first off your allowed to write God, if you weren't allowed to then the Bible would be sinning. The hebrew meaning of vain means evil, destructive, false, uselessness. So what that Scripture is saying is don't use God's name in evil, destructive, false, and a big one don't use it with uselessness. And for the part of referring to God as just a title, well this is what I have to say to that, there is only one true God and there are no other Gods before him. You might call a T.V. remote a gun but it doesn't make it one and in the same way you might call a belief a God but it doesn't make it one. So therefore there is only one true living God.

The Father's name is I AM, The Son is named Jesus.
So for the sakes of men who have not a Spiritual EYE by which to see at all times(comes by translation or resurrection, and even vision of Jesus.), The Lord God i can see with my fleshly eyes is Jesus Christ of Nazareth. i go to Him for all things. amen
i am nothing0
Jesus is The Lord1Praise The Lord1The Lord Jesus. amen
