  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The only situation I can see reading that as deeply metaphoric is if you are assuming the lack of a historical Jesus, or at least understanding the gospels as mostly myth added later.

Jesus was a carpenter because Joseph was a carpenter and that's how things worked in those days. He chose Joseph because of his bloodline (something that is made clear in several places) and possibly because he was in love with Mary, not because of his profession.

Sorry. My tolerance for cutesy metaphors is very low today. I've been reading too many Christmas cards.

yes I thought about that as well, but but you dont think there was some divine intervention in Joseph being a Carpenter? After all he was a desendant of David, so he shouldve been better off.

David was approximately 1000 years back. The kingdom he ruled over had changed hands several times. In modern terms, this is like saying a descendant of William the Conqueror should be well off.

One can never discount the possibility of divine intervention in any situation. However, since very little weight is put on Joseph or that fact that he was a carpenter and Jesus does not seem to refer to carpentry in his teachings with much frequency, it's quite possible that Joseph just happened to be a carpenter.

Out of all the things he couldve been, king inculded, he decided to be a carpenter. So the purpose of this thread is to figure out what he sees in Carpentry.

Is it that he loves making comfort for others?
Have you ever had the experience of being a carpenter, if at least an amateur one?

One time I helped out my brother and father construct a wooden floor. I worked many hours a day doing all the measurements and planning for the construction, and I also helped my brother position the pieces into place and held the wood when he cut it on the saw.

What's the point? By the end, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. We got to physically build a piece of fine work and were able to see the finished product in the end. I've worked a couple of white collar jobs and none of them pay off as well as what I experienced after building a simple floor. Carpentry is very rewarding and very symbolic of building and construction of human desires and goals. It simultaneously represents two things: Mankind's ability and desire to design and construct, and divine simplicity and humbleness.

Ah yes, as you say that, is it because he loves to create?

But, when I comes to the life of the Jesus, everything was planned out from the very beginning of mankind, maybe even before. God left nothing up to chance in his Son, everything was divinely established and carried out.
