1 Timothy 5: 8 says, “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” This is part of a series of Verses which advise us to maintain order in our household among people who live there. Verse 7 says to “Command these things as well...”

We may read 1 Timothy 5 in the context of the roof we live under, bu to the extent that each Verse in the bible, regardless of any context it is used, may stand by itself, it isn’t much of a stretch to say that a “household” and one who commands it, may extent to an entire nation.
Whoever commands that nation is responsible for maintaining order. Order cannot be maintained when the nation and its inhabitants are attacked by others; it therefore behooves whoever commands the nation to defend the nation against such attackers, giving that the first priority. To restore order in the country, the priority is to eliminate the threat.

This is nothing new. In 1 Samuel 30:1, the Amalekites made a raid against regions under David’s rule, and they took captive the wives of those who lived there as well as others. How did David and those under his command react? After he finds out where the captors were, in Verse 17 he “struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day, and not a man of them escaped...” Then in Verse 18 David recovers all that was taken, including the wives and others. So, the threat from the Amalekites was eliminated.

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk these days, about the rules of war in light of Hamas’ attack on Israel. Rules of war are nothing new; they’ve been in existence long before the Geneva Convention. In fact, they exist in the Bible under Deuteronomy 20. What are some of those rules?

Verse 10 says, “When you draw near to a city to fight against it, offer terms of peace to it.” Well, at least since 1993, Israel made peace efforts with Hamas but no avail.

Verses 3 and 4 says to remind the people going to war against the enemy that God is with them to give them victory. Keep in mind that Romans 13:1 tells us to be subservient to government authorities since their authority comes from God. In that regard, God helps orchestrate the victories and whoever rules and commands is doing so as an extension of God. Israel’s soldiers, top-down, pray before doing battle, acknowledging God’s Role, and seeking assurance of the path they are taking.

Verse 12 says that if your enemies refuse any peace efforts, you “shall besiege it.”

Verses 13 and 14 say, “And when the LORD your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword, but the women and the little ones, the livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as plunder for yourselves. And you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God has given you.”

Whenever you fight an enemy with God on your side, you are fighting evil. Anything that threatens your household under God is evil. Your household is your responsibility, which includes appointing those who will help you to maintain your household. Under God there is only one side for goodness and one side for evil. From your standpoint that’s the existentialism of it, such that as our God is concerned, no enemy can say that they represent goodness and we represent evil, in their attacks on us. A house is one that stands undivided, in the Spirit of God’s Goodness.
