Hello all,
This is not a topic about marriage, really, but I know a couple of the ladies here keep up with 'what the kids are listening to these days', and we talk about boundaries a lot here, so I just wanting to throw my thinking on a particular song out there.
Katy Perry's "Roar" is like a handbook of how to draw useless and ineffective boundaries.
(And yes, I've been wanting to say that out loud since August when the radio stations started playing it 40 times a day!
)
Here's the lyrics for reference:
It's all bluster. If I were the one pushing Ms. Perry "past the breaking point", and she wrote this song just for me, my response would be to let her get the roaring out of her system and then go back to telling her what to do. 'Cause she's gonna do it...
If you need to draw a boundary with someone, quit yelling, quit roaring, quit pumping yourself up with 'eye of the tiger' (though, frankly, that's a much better song for the purpose because it has some action in it), just a simple 'no' will do. And back that 'no' up with your actions. Simple, though not necessarily easy, but there's no extra decibels required.
Ok, I'm done roaring now.

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready 'cause Ive had enough
I see it all, I see it now
[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Youre gonna hear me roar
Now Im floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready cause Ive had enough
I see it all, I see it now
[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...
Ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Youre gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...
