OK folks it has come to down to this.....ok ok how many of us have seen SDA potlucks needing monitors and servers to curb the gluttony . It is an inheriant sin of gluttony I believe by GOD good graces it has opened my eyes and no loonger do I go to buffets and gorge myself. I seee the spare tire and bloated ego and most food there is against Leviticus food laws unless you eat the scally fish only and avoid the shrimp skewers and mussels in lovely sause and oooh lobsters and crabs legs all against what God deemed worthy for us to eat. So does anyone see the sin in these places. Not a place to HOLY our temples and oooh boy do you get fat fast there, Sin city eat your heart out baby.

Potlucks and buffets can certainly encourage gluttony and unhealthy eating. I guess for some people excesses in food are more of a temptation than others. For those who struggle in that area, it's probably wise to stay away (as much as possible) from places where they will be tempted to overeat.

I am not use to turning away food. I had to teach myself that just because there was food, and I wasn't stuffed, didn't mean I had to continue eating.

This was more not much of a problem for potlucks, as most of my experience with potlucks was that the food isn't very good. (also, most potlucks had tons of food, so the issue with running out wasn't so) The issue was actually US restaraunts, where meals are generally in excess of 2000 calories (Sometimes I think in excess of 3000 calories).

If you feel full, you have already eaten too much. If there is still food available, it doesn't mean you need to continue until you feel full. I don't count calories, but I do estimate them. And I don't go by how full my stomach feels.

Hey, good job JM! Losing weight can be such a pain, but when you do it in a healthy & SLOW way it's so much better for you in the long run.

My oldest son just turned 13. He is very active and requires a lot more calories than I do. The buffet places would LOSE money on that child.

So many Americans are overweight and I see a lot of different reasons for that. Number one, the issue isn't buffets or potlucks. It's people not having self-constraint.

I can remember overeating at a restaurant not too long ago because I remembered thinking I should get my money's worth and eat it all. Obviously I didn't have to eat it all at one sitting and I was miserable all night. I should've gotten a doggie bag.

Some people are very active and really can eat all they want, but when they stop being active the weight comes on really quickly.

Food can be an addiction just like anything else.

The potlucks aren't a problem when someone exercises self-restraint. But to a foodaholic, it's an entirely different story.

A recovering alcoholic could just avoid a bar, or make the determination that he wouldn't have any, but some might fail.

It's not always easy to say "when" or "no", but we pay the consequences when we don't, that's for sure.

They used to lose money on my hubby, too, and especially his brother when they were younger.

Buffets are a big temptation for some people because there's a never-ending food supply and the desire to get the most for your money. I know people who struggle with this. Some people have more self-restraint in this area than others. However, just as with any temptation that we may fall prey to, this can't be overcome by one's own willpower. I do believe that people who suffer from a compulsive overeating problem should try to avoid places that would trigger temptation. For some that could be buffets; for others it could be other places.

I agree. The thing about a food addiction is people CAN'T avoid temptation. They have to eat every day.

Imagine being addicted to something you had to deal with on a daily basis.

If you're addicted to cocaine you can remove yourself from certain places or people, but food is a constant. You couldn't have "just a little" cocaine if you're an addict.

And we can overeat at home or any restaurant, so I really don't think the issue is potlucks or buffets. They might think they're circumventing the temptation to go to McDonald's but if they order everything on the menu, it's still way too much.

I struggled with my weight after my brain surgeries. I had to take a really HIGH dosage of steroids to keep from going blind and oh man, I can't describe what that does to you.

I ate like a small football TEAM and never felt satisfied. It took a while to shake that weight. Then I had another baby, etc etc.

I got super skinny a few years ago and am working on getting back to that weight before my husband sues me for false advertising. :)

Thankfully I've been exercising and dieting, but I've never had a food addiction, so I really can't look down on someone that does. To me, it's the worst addiction there is.

I did have an eating disorder when I was pretty young (3rd grade) and my parents had to force feed me a few times. I can imagine what it's like to go in the opposite extreme from that experience. Sometimes you just cannot help it and you're consumed by the disorder.

It wouldn't matter if it was a buffet in front of you or a grocery store trip....it's the addiction that has to be dealt with, not necessarily the food.

Gluttony is not so much my concern... well, its part of my main concern: my main concern is when people think only of themselves.

Sometimes, you know, at least here quite frequently, there is just enough to feed everyone a filling meal. Yet you see people go up there with like, 2 plates, and stuff them full of food! They run up there, grab all they can then go away and gorge themselves. Kids doing it (even teenagers) I understand. Naturally they are inclined to think only of themselves. But when you see the elderly doing it... well... :sigh:
