  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've had two. The drink either tastes like really thick flat coke or really thick flat orange pop.

Both times instead of waiting in the waiting room, I was in a hospital bed half out of it. Both times I was asked to fast for 12 hours. Then given the drink and they watched me come off a sugar high...with pee and blood tests every 30 minutes for all 3 hours of the test.

I got the chills, dizzy and by the time I was laying down, my HUsband says I was so out of it it scared him. He was really worried about me.

I'm not trying to give you a horror story but I did not react well to the glucose tests.

Drink LOTS of water. Honestly it was the best thing and afterwards eat that helped to. I wouldn't drive there if I were you. I was so out of it for 3-4 hours afterwards...I acted like I was drunk. Get your hubby or someone to go with just incase.

I didn't have a problem with it (just had mine last month). If they give it to you cold, it's just like a soda. If they don't tell you to fast, still make sure not to eat any really sugary foods beforehand. And yeah, as far as I know drinking water during the hour you wait to get your blood drawn is okay, and really helped me. Then we had lunch right after, which helped also.

Mine tasted like flat orange soda, like most people have said. I didn't have any problems with it. I went to the appt. by myself all the times I've done it and had no trouble at all. I've always done it first thing in the morning and then treat my self to an Egg Mc Muffin on the way home.

It's not that bad. I even had to have an early one with this pregnancy because I had gestational diabetes with my last. Even in the midst of morning sickness I was able to keep it down. Like most others said - drink it cold and the orange is not that bad just really sweet

so how far along are you when you get it done?
This is my 24th week so I guess they do it around this time. I'm surprised your doctor hasn't discussed this with you yet. Do you go to an OBGYN?

I don't know why I'm so nervous about this but I am. I'm more nervous about it making me sick than giving blood eventhough I absolutely hate needles. So should I not eat anything before? I know I can't have anything with sugar but would it be best to do this on an empty stomach? They gave me the orange drink at my last appointment so it's been chilling in my fridge since.

My midwives said not to eat for an hour before the test, and to make sure what I ate was not very sweet. I had mine in the morning, so I had a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter (protein helps keep your blood sugar more stable) for breakfast a couple hours before I had the test.

I would ask your doctor about how much you can eat before the test. I have to have glucose tests every year, and I am not allowed to eat for 12 hours before hand. I hate it because I'm already hypoglycemic so it really messes with my sugar levels and I'm usually out of it the rest of the day. The drink itself didn't gross me out...it just tasted like really sugary orange soda. If you can't eat for awhile beforehand though, getting all that sugar at once can make you feel very icky :(
