  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

None of your three choices fit for me...

I think it is happening, but I think its effects are exaggerated. We know that sea levels will rise and cause flooding to low areas, but we don't know to what extent.

I'm not sure about the weather changes. I think, for us in the UK, a few degrees of higher temperatures are very welcome, but we don't like what comes along with that - unpredictable weather, less rain, nasty insects, etc.

Sadly, I think there are plenty of folks poised to make money off global warning.

If the hype causes us to conserve fossil fuels, then that is a good thing. The problem is when judgemental (and usually hypocritical) people cause others to feel guilty.

As a teacher of Science, I am often dismayed at how the media portrays the science and how the population latches onto misconceptions, and change their behaviour inappropriately. It gives me lots of good discussion material, though.

I think it's an imminent threat. A majority of top scientists believe it to be a very serious threat that needs to be dealt with immediately. And a range of top global economists and political experts are convinced its effects will be catastrophical.

while its effects may not neccesarily be an imminent threat, I do believe that we must change our behavior drastically and very soon in order to stop it. by the time the actual threat is imminent, it would be too late to stop

If not our children, then certainly our children's children, will curse our generation if we don't at least attempt to mitigate the effects of climate change, regardless of whether you argue it is man made or naturally occurring. There is little doubt left at all that the climate is changing, to my knowledge.

Question 1: Existence of Global Warming
Question 2: Human Impact on Global Warming
Question 3: Solvability of Global Warming
Question 4: Cost-Benefit analysis of solutions to global warming.

Questions 3-4 are rarely if ever asked. Or at least rarely get any attention. Question 2 gets better treatment but is all too often conflated with question 1.

There are a myriad of reports about all of those questions. Perhaps the biggest that I know of addressing the final two is the Stern Report.

I agree with all three, to some extent.

While the UK, a small island country, might be a prime position for a good media scare, I also believe that we humans have not done quite enough for our planet, and persist in our philosophy of sit-and-wait. You need to look no further than the petrol company's zealous purchasing of patents of any technology that might render fossil fuels redundant, or the horrific figures of waste dumpage in the ocean each year to feel rather yucky being human.

When a lot of the world is underwater, and we have not even begun to look into planet colonisation yet, maybe people might realise.

Looking at the issue through the point of an individual with faith in a benevolent deity, it might be argument enough to say contentedly: "<deity> has a plan for us all." With global warming, however, they may have considered that their deity may have instrumented global warming as a test of sorts, competence with their creation. Anybody have any thoughts on this theory?

The thing with global warming is it doesn't matter if its our fault, or even if its actaually happening, it doesn't hurt anyone to follow the scientific communities recamendations and use our cars a bit less. And if it is happening and caused by us, then we'll have done our bit.
