Here is a preview of what the pets will look like as they grow, sans faces.

also, when you select copy directly over a pet on a profileo r post you end up only copying the face... as such..... so what I would like to learn with gimp is how to overlay the face onto the chosen pet, then also to shoose a color for a pet and to discard the square around the pet to make it transparent in order to then lay the pet into a graphic such as warior does. now maybe I am just going about this all wrong and maybe someone else has a much easier way, or even has a collection of finished pets without the square that they would not mind offering in order that I can use them in generating new graphics with.
soooo, any suggestins on what I SHOULD do if I cant figure this out? I cant see myself actually trying to cut out each pet every time I want to use it so not sure how to save a master list to be able to copy into graphic backgrounds. if anyone has such a master list please let me know the only ones that I do have are the ones that are anmated that Gregged has given us, but not sure even if these would work as they are animated and not stationary.
very frustrated still with gimp, but willing to learn if anyone can simplify it any more. also found the following for anyone else still struggling to learn GiMP......

I have not had time to look it over but it is at least an alternative to the other tutorial(s) found so far.
