Gibeon and Gibeonites

Samuel 21:

2b Now the Gibeonites were not of the people of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites.

The Gibeonites feared God and deceived Joshua to make a treaty with them so that they were not destroyed along with other Canaanites. Jos 9:

26So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

Other Amorites were destroyed in Jos 10.

Joshua gave the city of Gibeon to the Levites (Jos 21:17).

Jeiel, a Gibeonite, was an ancestor of King Saul (1 ch 8:29-33).

King Saul had incorrectly sought to kill the Gibeonites (2 Sam 21:2). To atone for that, David gave 7 of Saul's descendants to the Gibeonites. They hanged them (v 9).

When David was king, 1 Chronicles 21:

29 The tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.

Before the temple was built, 1 Kings 3:

4 Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.5 One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!”

Hananiah was a false prophet from Gibeon. He contradicted Jerimiah (Jer 28:3, 13).

After the exile, Neh 3:

6 The Jeshanah Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. 7Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon and Mizpah—Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates.

Melatiah was probably not a Jew, but he repaired a section of the wall.
