i'm having a major problem. i'm having sinful thoughts. alot. and i don't want them. i don't sit there and think these thoughts. they just pop in. i end up praying for forgiveness quite a few times an hour. how do i get rid of these thoughts?
(the thoughts can be phrases, images, sounds, etc...anything.)
I have seriously battled with this issue over the years and the only way to beat it long term is to hit them with scripture. That way you are using the Sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) to battle with and are renewing your mind with the Word at the same time. Others here have mentioned scripture but they haven't given you anything specific so I will give you the ones I have used. I will give you the scripture and then the confession that I use to battle the thoughts. These scriptures are from the Amplified which I don't normally use, but I find it excellent for making scriptures into confessions.
From 2 Corinthians 2:3-5 - 3For though we walk (live) in the flesh, we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons.
4For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,
5[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),
I confess - "I take these thoughts captive into the obedience of Christ and cast down every thought that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God."
From Colossians 3:15 - 15And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ's] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always].
I confess - "I let the peace of God rule in my heart and mind."
From Romans 12:2 - 2Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
I confess - "I am not conformed to this world but am transformed by the renewing of my mind. My mind is renewed by the Word of God."
From Phillippians 4:7-8 - 7And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].
I confess - "The peace of God which passes all understanding keeps my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. And things which are good and pure and perfect and lovely and of good report I think only of these things. I do not speak or think or meditate on negative things, I only think and speak and meditate on positive things".
I hope this hasn't been too much for you, but I guarantee you that using these scriptures against unwanted thoughts of every kind definitely works. It will become more effective the more you do it. It will get easier as you get to know the scriptures by heart and they become sown into your spirit.
All the best.
