Actually, Luther wanted people who agreed with him to be called Evangelicals (Gospel-centered). His people kept calling themselves Lutheran and he finally gave in after much prodding by those people.
About the congregation shutting down, my pastor once preached a sermon that repeatedly made mention of the wrong OT lesson (a different one that had been read) and neither he or his wife knew it until I said something. I presume that the congregation didn't either. He got the sermon from a computer disk.
