OK, that sounds weird, especially in the bipolar forums (hi to everyone I haven't seen in a while!). But in the time I've been gone (school is taking up ALL my time!) I finally got tested for Celiac disease. It was finally finding a website that listed not only every abdominal/upset stomach/IBS complaint I've ever had, but *also* the fact that depression and mood instability are common presentations that got me to nagging my doctor.
My life has changed about 75%. Am I still bipolar? Yep. I've tried coming off my meds, and I can't do it. But I'm STABLE. (It's been YEARS since I've been able to claim that.) I didn't spend all summer in the hospital. I SLEEP. I mean, that's a miracle from God. I SLEEP. ZERO sleeping meds.
All this by removing gluten from my diet. It's been a total miracle for me. Who knew that FOOD was a source of so much trouble for me?
So, in the hopes that anyone else can find this information useful, cause it's literally saving my life, I'm going to share some of the symptoms with you. If you see yourself in them, please get the blood test from your doctor. What do you have to lose?

Abdominal pain
Abdominal distention, bloating, gas, indigestion
Constipation
Decreased appetite (may also be increased or unchanged)
Diarrhea, chronic or occasional
Lactose intolerance (common upon diagnosis, usually goes away following treatment)
Nausea and vomiting
Stools that float, are foul smelling, bloody, or fatty
Unexplained weight loss (although people can be overweight or of normal weight upon diagnosis)
Anemia (low blood count)
Bone and joint pain
Bone disease (osteoporosis, kyphoscoliosis, fracture)
Breathlessness (due to anemia)
Bruising easily
Dental enamel defects and discoloration
Depression
Fatigue
Growth delay in children
Hair loss
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Irritability and behavioral changes
Malnutrition
Mouth ulcers (note from me: these are canker sores)
Muscle cramps
Nosebleed
Seizures
Short stature, unexplained
Skin disorders (dermatitis herpetiformis)
Swelling, general or abdominal
Vitamin or mineral deficiency, single or multiple nutrient (for example, iron, folate, vitamin K)
THANK THE LORD I found this out. It's been such a blessing to know that a simple diet change means no more futzing with a million meds, no praying REALLY HARD to sleep, no planning my day around where the restrooms are, etc. And to be STABLE. It's a miracle.
I hope this information helps anyone else on here.
