God has already said that man will not live forever, after Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
So, man decided to go his own way, and decide for himself what's right and what's wrong. I'm just curious, where did man get his knowledge from, when he wrote the Bible, written after man had the knowledge of good and evil? Who gave him this knowledge? One of the reasons why I think God didn't want us to have that knowledge is because it causes us to get into an "I'm right and you're wrong" fight fest. God wanted us to be free to eat from any tree in the Garden, not to be slaves of other peoples beliefs, but now we're all gonna die. Just accept that and move on.
The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
-Genesis 2:15-17 (New International Version)
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
-Genesis 3:6 (New International Version)
And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
-Genesis 3:22-23 (New International Version)
