Sorry for my ignorance, but what is geocaching? I have heard some stuff about it, but not a lot.

One of the interesting things about geocachers is that there are so many reasons people find it interesting: the mental and physical challenges which can be extreme, the visit to interesting places, a peaceful walk in the great outdoors, a good family hobby for children to grandparents, and the accomplishment to find as many as possible.
There are a few geocaches in the world that have not been found. That is, everyone knows where they are, but their remoteness makes access a huge ordeal. Of course, those are very rare. I don't think any of those in the continental US remain unfound after more than a few years.
And I suspect that there is a geocache located within one mile of your home, perhaps several. They are hidden, but in plain sight once you are at their location and know where to look. If found, you sign the log and take and/or leave a small prize/item for the next geocacher. You then log all your finds on the geocaching website on your personal page. Many post pictures of their geocaching adventures.
We are very careful not to allow anyone who is not a geocacher know what we are doing so the caches remain undisturbed and safe.

There is a somewhat similar hobby known as
Waymarking. It provides you with the tools to share and discover unique and interesting locations on the planet.
Both are based on the "language of location."

I've done it a few times. I need to get my own gps someday. One time my brother found a geocash in the middle of nowhere that we weren't even looking for. We were pretty excited.
