  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's your favorite genre to write?

Do you always stick to this genre?

What attracts you to your genres?

Ever have a hard time fitting your work into a 'genre'?

Do the genres you like to write typically line up with the ones you like to read?

Discuss. The Writer's Guild is too quiet for my tastes :p

lol - I write almost solely in the fantasy genre. Even when I do try to write outside of it, my stories end up with some fantastical element. I'd say about 80 percent of what I read is fantasy. The other 20 is Contemporary Christian Fiction (I review it). I don't know why I love it so much, but I do.

The only place I have a difficult time placing my work is in the subgenre.

And be grateful - the Writer's Guild is one of the most active subforums on here ^_^

...Really? :o

I always found the topic of genre interesting because I like different genres. I usually favor a blend of fantasy with reality, but as of late I've tried some realism and had a lot of fun with it. My novella is pure realism (though an extreme case of it), and writing it was one of my favorite writing experiences.

Do you always stick to this genre? Not always, but if I write for fun, I usually do.

What attracts you to your genres? I love reading it, so writing poetry naturally attracted me. I love words, imagery, etc.

What's your favorite genre to write?

Science fiction, with a splash of dystopia.

Do you always stick to this genre?

Most of the time, though I have done fantasy in the past.

What attracts you to your genres?

I'm a geek that's into that stuff.

Ever have a hard time fitting your work into a 'genre'?

I have a hard time fitting facts into a stupid term paper... :D

Do the genres you like to write typically line up with the ones you like to read?

For the most part, though I am a fan of the Patrick O'Brien, which is primarily historical fiction.

My favorite genre is usually a mix of realistic characters with more fantastical elements. I don't always stick to this, however - some of my stuff is realism. I like to read almost everything, but ironically I don't read much fantasy. I have trouble fitting my work into a genre sometimes because of my fantasy-reality tendencies. I won't want to call it fantasy, but because of the premise or some of the elements, it's sure as heck not realism.

:)

Favorite Genre: Fantasy

Stick to it: I sometimes do science-fiction and christian fiction, but not a whole lot.

Attraction: fantasy allows for more creativity then other genres, I can make almost anything I want without being bound by the more grounded genres. Not saying they're bad, but suspension of disbelief goes only so far in westerns, historicals, romance, or even action/thrillers.

Hard time fitting into the genre: Nope, the hard part is keeping it out of the genre! Several of my unfinished stories (including my big one) started out as science-fiction but somehow turned into fantasy stories as time went on.

My writing and my reading: they're pretty much the same.

I don't really stick to any genre. Fantasy is by far my favorite, but I don't write much of that anymore. :o Hopefully, that will change soon.

Mostly, though, my stories are action dramas. As long as they have action and strong character, everything else is just setting (I could tell the same story in a Fantasy, a romance, or a die-hard shooter).

Sadly, I don't read much anymore. I just got two good fantasy books from the library today, though, so I'm hoping to pick that, and fantasy-writing back up.
