  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings puffca,
genesis 3:4

Do you understand it as
A. "probably you will not die", or
B. "definitely you will not die"?

A. Satan was being crafty by not denying God directly.
B. Satan was denying God directly.

What do you think.
I believe it says "B. "definitely you will not die"? ". And I also believe it was the serpent, a creature made by God on the 6th day, and given intelligence to reason not Satan who was denying God directly. I do not believe in a supernatural fallen angel. God is in control of his creation.

I suggest that the serpent saw the tree of life, and that Adam and Eve could take the fruit and not die. But the serpent did not consider the intervention of God before they took of the tree of life, and they were expelled from the garden to preserve the way of the tree of life.

Kind regards
Trevor

I believe it was b. in both cases. While I'm not a scholar or anything, I understand that in Genesis 2:17, God told Adam that if he ate of the tree of knowledge, 'you will surely die', not that he would drop dead right then, but that it would certainly happen (my commentary says that the words "shall surely die" are made of two forms of the verb meaning "to die"). So when the serpent tells Eve that "you will surely not die", this was the first time that Satan lies - in essence, he called God a liar.

Maybe Satan was telling Eve that she wouldn't perish forever, even though she might die physically. Of course Eve had no way of differentiating between the two concepts. (We know that physical death is also a type of eternal death, but Eve knew nothing of either.) That would mean that Satan was telling the truth, even though it was for the purpose of deception. Pretty clever of him/her/it.

Satan was denying God's word directly. He was once an angel of light: He knew that the physical body would not die, but that the spiritual body would.:groupray:

Satan could not deny the existance of God as God came along in the cool of the day as He regularly did...the thought process is the same as in Isaiah 14 of joining God in the rule of the earth. The "serpent" was trying to convince Adam and Eve that this was something that God didn't wish for them to have as it would put them more equal with God and with God more. God was trying to keep them from something at the same time...It was all about rationalization for a sin as if they deserved it or needed it and God was somehow not as good as they thought He was for some reason.
