  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have a question that has me confused: In Genesis 2:4, it says "...in the day that God created the heavens and the earth." But Genesis 1 says God created the earth in six days. The Hebrew word yom is the word used in Gen 2:4, the same as all over Gen 1.

Good question. As in any language, context ultimately determines the meaning of words. Thus, YOM in Genesis 1 is being used in the sense of a 24 hour period. However, in Hebrew the phrase BeYOM HaHu (in that day) has a different referent. Sometimes it can be a specific time (a day on the calendar) or a specific, but indefinite period. In the case of Genesis 2:4, the phrase carries that connotation.

We do the same in English. "I've told you a thousands times...." That does not mean that Mom kept a record of every instance that she told you something. Rather the number refers to "more than enough times".

They are two separate accounts that simply cannot be literally reconciled.

It is one of the strongest supports for TEs that can be found right in the Bible, even if it is indirect.

Edit: It comes to my attention that perhaps this should be in Origins Theory?

yom is used several hundred times in the OT. It means two things in regards to time:
1) literal 24 hour day
2) a period of time or age

Gen 2:4 is likely mentioning the period of time, or age when God created the Earth (either the 6 day period, or the 6 age period...neither is contradicted). This idea does not conflict with any of the Creation theories or even the Theistic Evolution theory. Linguisitically speaking, each time the word yom is used, you have to decide if it means "day" or "age".
