  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think its fantastic. I wish there was a way for me to find out about my family but many records, places, people all perished during the genocide. All we know if from word of mouth. I however, do know what part of Turkey my great grandparents lived, which part of Lebanon they went to during and after the Genocide. As for my moms side, well they were in the same boat but they died much earlier when my mom was young so she didn't know much and my grandparents never talked about it.

Ethie, forgive my stupidity (and the fact that I could probably find it online. I like personal knowledge so much more!), but when did the genocide occur? Is it possible that some of the records would have been preserved by then? I don't know anything about it, I'm just curious.

Also, I would suggest that you log what you do know by word of mouth. It will make things easier for your children, their children, etc.

Oh, I have logged it. If I was smart enough 10 years ago when I saw my grandparents I would have asked questions and recorded on camera. But, I remember I had asked some but they only wanted to talk about a few. They saw some horrible things and even till their death bed they didn't talk about it.

Records state that it started about 1915-1917. I think other historical records show it might have been earlier but deportation did start around that time early in the year. If there are records of my grandparents they must be somewhere in Turkey, but I have no idea. I think we would spend thousands of dollars but I have no idea where it would actually lead us. You know having 3500 year history you would think a group of people would keep records and maybe there is something, but we don't know. I know more of the history of the cultural and the group rather then individual people. I think that is usually how we define ourselves. Not as individuals but a group which makes learning about who each person is and what happened much harder.

I'm glad you logged it! YAY. I will see if I can be nosy and find any possible records that would have survived, if you would like?

I posted a few times on this over in the Genealogy thread and I enjoy and believe in this study for many reasons. It has helped me understand some of who I am and alot of what I am made of.

Cool. Please continue chatting with us about it. What is the most interesting thing you've learned? And the most shocking?

I know my sister has traced our fmaily back some.. not sure how far she's gotten though. It can be a bit tricky to find the right person though I think she said..

I like it too.. started a digital thread at one point but got stuck and never took it up again.

My father is doing quite a bit of genealogy work on his family and his cousin got ahold of him through facebook and I believe they have been working together. Hard for him, because last names were not used until recently in countries like Denmark.

However, my mom said her dad was related to Robert the Bruce (the guy in Braveheart), so if that's true it's kinda cool.

I'm adopted and know absolutely nothing about my biological family except that they're Irish or Irish-American.

My adopted family however...
My one of my mom's cousins once did a geneology tracing half of the family all the way back to the Netherlands in I think it was the 1700s. And the other half, my uncle has traced back at least to the American Revolution and the signing of the Declaration of Independence (a couple of ancestors were signers of both that and the Constitution).
My dad's family, nothing solid, though I'm pretty sure at one point my grandmother said one of her grandmothers came over from Ireland. I really need to talk to my aunt at some point to see if she knows anything about that side of the family since everyone else in her generation (my dad and uncles) and older are deceased, or at the very least names so I could get it started.
