  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes or no?

I LOVE this hobby and will start spending time on it again in the near future. I also want to trace my husband's lineage.

I once had a digital tree of my maternal grandfather's family all the way back to 1675 in Wales, England. This time I will be building a digital and paper copy because my computer crashed (how lucky!) and I lost my years of research. BOO. Hopefully because I remember some things about it, it won't be quite so difficult to trace this time around. We'll see.

Anyhow...are you interested in this, and/or have you done it?

There's a thread in Singles right now that sparked this thread; blame them. :p

The most interesting thing I found is that my family is related to the outlaw, Jesse James.

Wow! That is so cool! It can be really interesting finding the people in family backgrounds!

We have traced ours back on one side to the 1500s ( I believe) I guess we are related to one of the kings of England from long ago. We also found that someone in our background was a martyr.

Indeed very intriguing, your majesty.

I confess- I have no interest in genealogy :sorry:

My aunt had traced back my mom's side of the family a few hundred years but nothing hugely interesting was in that because they were all in the Netherland's, where my Grandpa is originally from.

So even if there was a famous or infamous name, I wouldn't know it (or be able to pronounce it lol)

It's not everyone, sure. :)

I would find just knowing their names and that they were from the Netherlands very interesting. I'm easily amused, though, so take it for what it's worth. hahaha.

I find genealogy to be fascinating, though I like history and this is personal/family history. I had done a ton of research and put it into a tree on ancestry.com. Ancestry.com decided to erase my tree and their customer service says they can find no evidence that it ever existed. That tree went back to the 1500s or late 1400s, too. :sigh:

My aunt (hopefully still) has a book that my grandmother's aunt made for my grandmother. It traces our family to William Penn. It's an interesting scrap book with pictures, family poetry, and stuff like that.

I would like to do some more research in the future for myself and future children. Definitely will be backing up that data this time, though.

I love genealogy too! I am an adoptee, and I've done both my adoptive family and biological family trees. I love history in general so it's right up my alley.

I LOVE familysearch.org and have found more from them than I ever did on Ancestry. Ancestry is useful for keeping your records and the little "hints" but if your research takes you out of the USA, I find Ancestry to be pretty useless. One thing I would suggest to anyone using familysearch...ORDER THE FILMS. There are WAAAYYY more records available that haven't been put online yet that you can find in their microfilm library! You'll have to go to a family history center to do it (in a local Mormon church) but it is SO worth it. I think the last time I ordered one it was about 5 dollars to cover shipping, but you can come in and view it and make copies to your heart's content. I knew my g-grandma was born in this little village in Germany and could never find her on the website, but I ordered the church films from that town and there she was! Even found out there were more family members, where her father came from, etc. There's way more info there than what is online.

Ok getting off my genealogy soapbox now. :p

I think its fantastic. I wish there was a way for me to find out about my family but many records, places, people all perished during the genocide. All we know if from word of mouth. I however, do know what part of Turkey my great grandparents lived, which part of Lebanon they went to during and after the Genocide. As for my moms side, well they were in the same boat but they died much earlier when my mom was young so she didn't know much and my grandparents never talked about it.
