  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey,

I just downloaded a program off of the web that's supposed to help me sort and organize any research that I've done in regards to my ancestry. This particular software is called "Legacy Family Tree" v6.0

Then I got to wondering what software, if any, the rest of you are using. Maybe I can get a better recommendation.

Thanks!

I've tried several. In the town I lived in Newfoundland for 26 years (pop 1100) everybody is related to everybody. The community began with 8 families and grew from that. I ended up doing the geneology of everybody in the community and then it expanded to the other 7 communities nearby. (Lots of inter-marriages)

I now have a tree with over 3500 names in 8 communities; complete with full histories of the regions businesses, industries, schools, government, etc. Been at it since 1970. Not finished yet. lol

Now I use my own methods. No program I have found can take all the information.

Right now I'm using Family Tree Maker 16, but my husband just ordered the new 2009 version for me.

I think I am to the point where I am going to start everything over from scratch. I wasn't as careful about documentation when I first started doing this 15 years ago.

Hi, how's things,
I noticed your post and remembered something. Did you know that you can go to the LDS website and use their ancestry search online program, free, gratis and you do NOT have to be a Mormon either.
Don't know if I am allowed to c/p links but here it is,
familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
I know it is not the same as your own computer program but if you need to just get some fast facts then try the LDS site,
God bless,,

I currently use Family Tree Maker Version 16. It's okay for the average user but there are quirks in it that I do not like. I like to click [once] and have something all mapped out for me. When I run into a problem, and cannot figure it out, I get frustrated, and end up doing nothing.
- I have been referred to a program called, "Master Genealogist". It is a little more expensive than normal but it puts you in control. I am getting it soon.
- If you are just doing "average" genealogy then Family Tree Maker is probably the best "bang for your buck". I hear that the latest version [2010] has worked out a lot of things/quirks people did not like.
-Try praying about it. That's what I do a lot of the time.

I used Family Tree Maker for years, but about a year ago I downloaded Legacy the free version and liked it so much I upgraded to 7.0 and switched to Legacy. I'm really happy with my decision. They have on-line tutorials and lots of help, a great program. IMHO
